this summer i tried to comprise a list of books that meant a lot to me when i was a kid and this is what i came up with but it only goes up to about 6th grade or so. madeline l'engles' a wrinkle in time quadrilly, the hounds of the morrigan, the neverending story and momo by micheal ende, the wizard of earthsea trilogy by ursula leguin, the dark angel, the last unicorn, something wicked this way comes and that story about the girl who gets locked in the closet when the sun comes by ray bradbury, bruce coville's short unicorn story, the OZ books, harrison bergeron, the Changeling, the mural master, any of ruth chew's witchy novels, the old fairies popup book, the chronicles of narnia, the little mermaid and tuck everlasting by natalie babbit, the bridge to terebithia, the witches by roald dahl, dominic, the red amarylis, the lizard men, the black cauldren series, the dark is rising, and john bellairs mysteries. the bigger longer more grown up books that delved into these kinds of things almost inevitably fail to live up to the standards raised by these childhood stories. even their bigboobed airbrushed plasticine sheen covers overrealistically and undercreatively drawn usually sucked. it's like biting into a twinkie that's all fluff and no filling. i can go back to any of these books and be completely happy all over again. most recently i think blood meridian by cormac mcarthy is pretty mindblowing.
