About Me

Unlike my brothers I probably have the most well known quote.
Honk Hello there! My name is Harpo Marx. I was born November 23, 1888. I lied my real name is Adolph Marx. I play harp. They say I am pretty good. Well my name IS Harpo. People have always wondered why I don't talk. Well there is a story behind it. My uncle gave my brothers and I a script. I looked over it but found no speaking lines. I was furiated. My uncle said that it would be an excellent idea to use pantomime. I agreed. But in a performance I used mostly pantomime, but spoke as well. When the critics wrote about the performance they said that my pantomime was beautiful, but everything was spoiled the minute I spoke. So I never uttered a word since then. NO! I will never tell anyone how I produce so many different pbjects out of my coat. I can't really make a candle light on both ends and I will never tell anyone how I made it look possible. I guess you can call me the *special* one of the Marx Brothers or just an original movie clown.I changed my name to Arthur during World War 1. There was a lot of anti- German sentiment in America and Adolph sounded too German.I taught myself to play the harp, and played it in an "unconventional manner" with an "idiosyncratic" tuning of the strings. While I later learned that I did not play the instrument in the "accepted manner," my fame with the instrument drew musicians from all around to learn my style. I guess I am pretty good huh?I got his stage name during a card game: the dealer called me "Harpo" because I played the harp. My other brothers were given names to match their personalities or hobbies; my brother Leonard became "Chicko" (Chico) because he was always chasing women ("chicks"), and my brother Milton became "Gummo".I am married to a beautiful women named Susan Fleming and we adopted 4 beautiful children; Bill, Alex, Jimmy and Minnie.

I play harp. I love everything involving music. Of course I never really made it my major job but I loved it. I could probably play any inturment perfectly in just a couple of weeks. No problem.Chico got lessons on the piano. But Groucho and I were both self taught.
