The Brudenell Entertainments Committee is a group of volunteers who hope to secure the Brudenell Social Club's ability to host live music, DJs and community events. Currently the Committee has six members; Dom, Claire, Neil, Stu, Lucy and Jonny, who are all involved in local music/arts events in the city. The main Committee at the Club have kindly allowed us to take over the upkeep of the main room, which is used for live performances and many small DIY gigs which are vital to the music scene in Leeds.
Leeds City Council had been concerned about noise issues relating to gigs at the Club, after complaints from local residents. Our aim is to do as much as we can to curb these complaints, and therefore help the Club keep its' license and stay open.
In 2005 alone we managed to raise over 7000 pounds through gigs, donations, 2 bring and buy sales, badges and a host of other activities. Thank you very much for your support!
To date the following work has been carried out at the club with the money raised:
New Double firedoors (to the right of the stage)
New Single firedoor (behind the stage)
Back wall has been repainted
Ceiling Tiles have been repaired
Toilet facilities have been repaired, even fucking Keri Morgan helped out!
New lights and fader have been installed
Bass Bins purchased
Temporary Stage purchased
Much of this work has been carried out by volunteers, and the committee has strived to ensure that every penny faised has been spent wisely.
The club have offered to donate the VAT refund from our firedoor donation so we can sort out other small jobs like electrics and lighting, and if we have the cash, we plan to install Moz & Stu's PA permanently in the venue.
We have acquired a couple of TVs and are looking for any donations of audio visual equipment which can be used by promoters who hire the club.
The Entertainments Committee are re-developing the Brudenell website slowly. These pages are temporary and we are expanding our content all the time. We need help with writing more sections, so if you have any local knowledge (or knowledge of the Club) and would like to contribute, please email us. We're also building a small photo archive, so any good pictures of gigs would be very welcome.
Entertainments Committee meetings are at 6pm on Wednesdays, usually in the members' bar. Everyone with an interest in the upkeep and survival of the Brudenell is welcome to attend a meeting and get involved.
How much have you raised? The Events Committee have raised around 7000 pounds so far, from benefit gigs, bring and buy sales, donations from other local promoters and clubs, selling badges, online PayPal donations, and a donations jar in the club itself.
How have you spent the money? Funds have been spent on a new set of double fireproofed doors for the main gig room, and a single fire door for the backstage area. Both sets of doors are acoustic, soundproofed doors, made to the same standard as those used by the BBC.
We have also spent money on moving the main lighting rigs and replacing all bulbs and gels in the stage lights. There are two new floor lights and a programmable dimmer unit on stage. We have repainted the back wall behind the stage, fixed locks in the toilets, fixed a hole in the stage, replaced broken ceiling tiles, purchased new PA equipment including bass bins, and purchased a temporary stage for smaller/ more intimate gigs, to be used on the dancefloor area.
Has the soundproofing worked? We have had no further noise complaints since the doors were installed. We still insist that all bands load out of the front doors after gigs to avoid unnecessary noise from loading equipment into vans etc.
Will you continue to raise money? The urgent fundraising is over, but the Entertainments Committee still meets regularly, and we plan to continue improving the Club's facilities. Suggested uses for future donations include video projectors and projector screens, and improvements to the PA.
We encourage people to organise their own shows, the Brudenell does not organise music events themselves, so please do not send them demos. It may be worth looking at some of the web sites on our links page and considering if any of these regular Brudenell Promotors are likely to be into your music.
The Fee to hire the room is:50 pounds a night
Deposit must be paid to secure your booking. Deposits must be paid in cash at the Venue. Cancellations made within 4 weeks of your booking will result in Deposit being kept. A booking form must be completed each time you book a gig.
If you are booking Fridays or Saturdays the venue needs a minimum of 80 punters, as these are important nights financially for the club.
Price is for Room Hire only, and does not include PA. The Capacity of the Music Room is 350. Music must finish by 11pm Monday-Saturday and 10.30pm Sunday, this essential to avoid further noise complaints, so please time your event with these deadlines in mind, no extensions can be granted.
The PA generally used in the room is supplied by Moz and Stu. If you require a bigger PA then this will have to be arranged independently, please bear in mind the limitations of the club size and acceptable sound volume.
