P ARAKENTRO is a non-profit cultural organization founded by Costas Cacoyannis (composer) and Pambos Kouzalis (poet). Its members are a team of well known artists, each representing a different art form: Klitsa Antoniou (visual artist), Kleitos Kleitou (film director), Maria Papaioannou (soprano), Irene Cacoyannis (music educator), Caroline Constantinou (choreographer), Despoina Pyrketti (writer).
The Parakentro building is a renovated 19th century stone house located in Lemythou village (Troodos Mountain) in Cyprus. One of the major goals of Parakentro is to invite international and local artists to reside as guests in Lemythou. During their stay, they will be able to use the facilities offered so as to create new works of art (poetry, literature, paintings, sculptures, music compositions, film and theatrical productions etc). All works will be published, recorded, exhibited and/or presented by Parakentro so as to make Troodos Mountain, an important culture production center. Young artists can attend the free seminars and concerts that are organized by Parakentro.
The recording studio is equipped with professional digital consoles, computers and sound libraries. The facilities offered enable all guest composers, musicians and poets to record and release to CD their performances and compositions. Guest film directors can also use the studio for sound editing.
Parakentro offers professional film making and lighting equipment for the production and editing of documentary films, video poetry and music videos. A book publishing/graphics design lab is also available, making possible the complete pre press preparation of any printed document! With a 2000 Gb web space, artists in residence can exhibit their creations through the internet (videos, music, paintings, photos, texts, essays etc.) without any size limitations. In the past three years, and without being fully operational, Parakentro has disinterestedly supported many international and local artists: â—Oreivates (a chorus with children from the surrounding villages of the Troodos mountain area) with the CD release “Kalanta†â—Stelios Pissis -a composer with muscular dystrophy- with the award winning documentary film “Stelios†that presents his life. â— Armando Mora (a Mexican tenor) with the CD “Profundumâ€. â— The children of St. Anthony elementary school, in the creation of a Greek/Turkish bilingual CD with their own compositions (so as to promote friendship amongst Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots). â— Film director Korinna Avraamides (unlimited access to the recording studio, for the needs of her latest motion picture). â— Fajr Jacoub (a film director from Syria) in his film “The Penguin†◠Choreographer Caroline Constantinou, in her award winning ballet Kymata.
Parakentro has published 13 CDs, two poetry books, two music books, two documentary films –one awarded-, ten video poems, nine music videos, and has organized several poetry, film and modern dance events.
The Parakentro building is surrounded by seven independent yards and verandas with full view to the Troodos Mountain forests. On the front side of the building, there is an enclosed open-air performance stage, to be used for concerts, exhibitions, film projections and theatrical productions.
Parakentro has four meeting rooms for seminars, study and entertainment. All rooms are equipped with satellite internet, DVD player, laptop computers, speakers and projector/LCD screen for multimedia presentations.
Parakentro in collaboration with Hellas SAT participates in a European Union program called “Rural Wingsâ€. Children from the surrounding villages are able to use the satellite facilities for teleconferencing, communication, artistic collaboration and mutual education with children from similar rural areas of the European Union. other spellings: Costa Cacoyannis , Costas Cacoyiannis, Costas Kakoyiannis, Costas Cacoyannis, Costas Kakogiannis, Kostas Kakogiannis, Κώστας Κακογιάννης, Κώστα Κακογιάννη, Κώστας Κακογιάννης www.parakentro.com, Pambos Kouzalis Πάμπος Κουζάλης, Πάμπο Κουζάλη, Πάμπου Κουζάλη
