Unabashed Gratuitous Self-Promoting Third-Person Blurb:
DJ Woody mixes music at the intersection of mind and matter, always concerned with a sound that is esoteric and yet tenaciously present. His sets are a nexus of influences: traces of progressive synth lines fold into tribal percussion, fat dubby basslines wash over mechanized industrial loops, tweaked harmonics synchronize with funky disco riffs, old samples make friends with alien beats, sinister soundscapes surround quirky melodies. His track selection avoids rigidity and over-genrification, recognizing the multi-faceted energies which feed modern techno--funky, tribal, tech, acid, progressive, minimal, electro. Though his DJing is always about having fun, dancing, and letting loose, DJ Woody's mixing is also driven by a belief in the power of underground electronic music to bring different people together and free them from the burdens of ordinary life. Techno's melding of tribality with technology can be a political force which has the potential to combat xenophobia and open minds to new forms of play, freedom, and community. Over the past decade, DJ Woody has evolved from a novice college radio station DJ with a late-night ambient/noise show to a hardworking promoter and techno DJ who has played at shows with the likes of Donald Glaude, Robert Armani, Derek Plaslaiko, Camea, Dietrich Schoenemann, Paul Anthony, Frankie Vega, Junior Vasquez, Gant Garrard, Kazell, Agent Orange, Gabriel Palomo, Habersham, Avex Axiom, Jason Patrick, Coalition of the Killing, Camea, Cyborg K, Mindub and Terrence Parker. Woody's curiosity for electronic music quickly escalated from mere listening and dancing to mixing when as a club-goer and radio DJ he was able to see the process of DJing firsthand. It didn't take long before he was dropping vinyl by Josh Wink, Green Velvet, Dave Clarke, Plastikman, and Jeff Mills, among his countless other influences. In addition to spinning regionally at underground dance events, DJ Woody also spins at several of the regular monthly and weekly events around Nashville, including Nashville's only minimal/techno monthly, BERLIN (one of the only events of its kind in the Southeast). He is also part of the house/electrohaus/techno trio HEaT (w/ Jane Dupree & John Napier). His promotional outfit Something Wicked brings truly underground talent and has thrown some of the most talked-about parties in Nashville. Recently, DJ Woody has been delving into the realm of production, experimenting with ways of translating his vision of music into productions of his own. Stay tuned for uploads of these productions, as well as new mixes, as they are recorded.
