The Riveter/ The Lady Foursquare: Jacking Outside of the Box
2006 was an extraordinary year for The Lady Foursquare. Within minutes of hearing her first two tracks, Felix da Housecat was convinced that The Riveter had the right sound for his Rude Photo imprint, “I want both tracks!†With previous the releases on Rude Photo including the worldwide smash, “Jack U vs. House U†featuring P. Diddy, this was an astonishing development in the career of a brand new producer and one of America’s best kept secrets behind the decks. Within 4 months this Louisville Slugger had packed a handful of things left her hometown for the Windy City.
She continues a heavy schedule of production with her rework of the upcoming Funk Monkey’s release for Mike Gillenwater’s Bias Recordings taking it’s place next to contributions from Sebastien Leger and Billy Dalessandro. Her remix of Punisher’s “K.O.†represented the Uppercut label for Movement 2007. In the fall of 2007 the West Eddy studio was completed, where she now churns out a heavy schedule of releases. Her remix of She's Lost Control by Joy Division, completed with Angel Alanis, is scheduled for release in late October in conjunction with the biopic of Ian Curtis' life, "Control." The 2 track EP has a banging New Order/Pet Shop Boys rework on the flip and is already garnering radio play in several European markets. Next on the plate is a remix for DJ Pierre's Afroacid label with Chuck Bleu of Yoshitoshi. With such a heavy schedule of production work, it is eas to forget that she was known first as a DJ, honing her inimitable aggressive technical flare, incredible energy and turntablist trickery by tagging with good friends Mark and Craig of the VHS or BETA DJs at a hometown residency. She quickly found praise from a wide range of artists including Matthew Dear (Ghostly International /Minus), DJ Skribble: (Bad Boy), Paul Johnson (Dust Traxx Chicago), Nigel Richards (611 Records) and Derek Plaslaiko (Spectral Recordings). In 2003 her reputation as a top regional touring DJ and the popularity of her widely distributed turntablist house DJ mixes led her to represent UFO Jeans for the United States in a 2003 tour.
In 2006 Backbreaker Recordings launched her material in the Body Language project. Her tracks as The Riveter have received support from Donald Glaude, Bear Who?, Frankie Vega and of course Felix da Housecat. The first release was charted all over the world in a matter of a month after it’s debut.
In 2007 she was signed to the Racecar Productions label and is slotted for a solo release featuring remixes from top international techno producers.
As “The Lady Foursquare†her mixed CD’s remain incredibly popular today. The sound of 2003's “Let Me Show You Love†proved ahead of the curve, forecasting the re-emergence of electro and acid in house music, long before many were interested. While only 150 original copies this now classic 2002 turntablist house gem were pressed, it remains heavily traded by loyalists. With an unknown number of hardcopies circulating (even turning up unauthorized in one retail store), “Let Me Show You Love†has been downloaded over 10,000 times. The Lady followed LMSYL with 3 more stunners: “Hollerback: Live From the Hushabye House," a tour de force live set, that showcases the turntablism which has become her calling card “What Happened?," (2004), "Cabin Fever: Live on WLCV" an hour of extremely clean and technical mixing, highlighting her ear for classic musicality and programming (2003). All of her mixes adhere to a strict live/ no edits policy so that what you hear is what you get.
The Lady continues to manage Hushabye House, the legendary private, flyerless underground event cycle. Hushabye “keyholders†include Matthew Dear, the Dust Traxx Sweat family, Juke legend Gant Garrard, Derek Plaslaiko and many more. The most recent event, Let Me Show You Love II featured a special tag set between the Lady and Angel Alanis.
In 2007 she was added to the GrooveBuzz roster which includes Angel Alanis, Bear Who?, Harrison Crump, Frankie Vega and the new minimal chart toppers from the Siteholder label. In addition to touring, she already has 5 releases slated in the remainder of this year alone. In March, her alter ego, Marea appeared in a professional capacity as a panelist discussing advances in digital dance sales, digital distribution and startup labels as the representative from GrooveMedia Group with along with the Dust Traxx, Inc., Sole Unlimited Distribution, Perfecto Records, AOL Music and other industry heads on several panels at the 2007 Winter Music Conference. As the Director of the GrooveMedia Group, she controls digital catalog content for over 500 of the worlds top dance acts for licensing and distribution.
