Sonoc de Las Tunas

The name stands for “Sonoridad Cubana”, from the province "Las Tunas" and means “sonority from the province of Las Tunas”. Sonoc de las Tunas was founded in October 1993 by the bassist, Gilberto Portilla Sánchez, in the Cuban province’s capital, Las Tunas, in the heart of the “Oriente”. Right from the beginning they were accepted as a “I. Nivelo” (1st Category) Band by the National Musician Organization. With “Sonoc de las Tunas” new life is breathed into young Cuba and the classic melodies á la Buena Vista Social Club with modern arrangements and impressively explosive displays of Afro-Cuban rhythms.For their present German and European tour, Sonoc has once again brought along a new program - one which demonstrates that modern Cuban music is more than a copy of American Hip-Hop Beats à lo Cubano. The young musicians of Sonoc, under the direction of Gilberto Portilla, have paved their own path and created their own sound between traditional and modern; a style which is not set in stone but rather allows experimentation with both classic and original compositions. It is this which comprises the “Sonoc” sound. On stage, these musicians generate enormous power and naturally, the expected Cuban charm.Sonoc is not just 8 studied and professional musicians who stand beside each other on stage, but is instead a perfect ensemble whose members know exactly how to play off one another and how to achieve all the subtleties and finesse of Cuban music at its best. Their Salsa, Merengue, Son, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo, Regeaton, and Rumba pieces get any crowd going strongly so that the summary of any concert sounds something like this:“The hot dance atmosphere sprung the crowd from their seats!”Consequently, the group has been touring in Germany and Europe for the past 14 years and is the winner of the Emiliano Salvador Award Cuba 2006 for the Best Arrangement of Cuban Music.
