Is there any there there at all?

About Me

Yeah. About me. Not that interesting and you probably don't really care now, do ya? I'm deeply cynical and disappointed about the world around me. Maybe that sort of makes the rare flashes of decency and honesty all the more enjoyable, but it's damn near unbearable most of the time.
Short version - Ph.D., former rock god, current daddy, hoping someone invents the 40-hour day soon so I can get caught up. Hanging out online because there's no time left over to hang out anywhere else.

My Interests

Music, especially music gear. Effect pedal mods. Guitar building and customization. Sports. African political economy. Online organizing. Being left alone to mind my own business. Watching yet another member of the American Taliban get caught with a dick in his mouth.

I'd like to meet:

I have no interest in meeting anyone here offline. Zero. Nada. None. Online correspondence is welcome, but I can't fit all of the things I have to do in my days as it is.
Atheists, academics, musicians, and other interesting people. Bleeding hearts and artists. Folks who bring more to the table than self-pity and a charge card. If you fit into any of these categories send a message and/or a friend request. There must be at least a few people out there who have something to offer? Somebody? Anybody?
Bands that make fun and creative music instead of playing a cookie-cutter stereotype. I don't care to hear about your angst, rage, shopping habits, or how you're "keeping it real." Are you trying to convince me or yourself?
Anyone who is disgusted by the creeping theocracy in the U.S. People who realize that all leaders and politicians lie and that it's up to us to fix things in spite of (and to spite) them. Maybe you if you've read this far and nodded in agreement at some point.
Monkeys. Lots of monkeys. Wearing fezes and driving little cars. Threatening tourists. Maybe washing a cat.

Music:

Wow, music really sucks now. I mean, there's always been a lot of shite out there, but I've never seen such a collection of disposable crap. Mostly have to stick with classic stuff like Floyd, Sabbath, etc. 70's and early 80's punk like the Clash, Crass, Pistols, and whatnot. Motorhead. There's lots of great stuff coming from Asia, which is apparently the last place on earth that bands do what they want, and still write their own stuff and play their own instruments. Some bands that I found right here on Myspace are very good, so listen to their stuff and buy it already.

Movies:

Kurosawa. Godfather I and II. Hitchcock. Bogart. Brando. Epics with casts of thousands. The Heston. Good horror films that create a mood without copping out with buckets of blood. Godzilla flicks are 100% fun. This is Spinal Tap. Billy Bob's stuff can be entertaining sometimes.

Television:

Sports. Avoiding all so-called "news" that isn't read by someone named Stewart or Colbert. Simpsons. Periodic searches for something that's not complete dreck but rarely ever finding anything.

Books:

Yay books! I like books! I consume them like Oprah consumes bon bons. Except I get all fat with knowledge instead of with fat. Writing one myself as it turns out, although it's apparently much more difficult than it appears.

Heroes:

There are a few folks that I greatly admire, but I'm my own hero. You should be your own hero too.
