INTRODUCTION:
Welsh maybe, but Jakokoyak may very well have schooled at Air and Mellows French ambient establishment. This is one mans chilled out journey and its pretty special. There is a Beta Band, Super Furry Animal prog-ness about it, but its more cut down. Unlike the aforementioned Air and Mellow, Jakokoyak hasnt opted to sing in English, but has stuck to Welsh and that adds an extra interest somehow because I suppose 90% of us will have to guess what each song is about. Recorded with harmonica, melodica, guitars, keyboards and vocals, the Jakokoyak sound is seductive, perfect for late night smoky bars and rainy nights.
To date, Jakokoyak has released the award winning debut album 'Am Cyfan Dy Pethau Prydferth'. Rhys Edwards aka Jakokoyak has produced a kind of low-profile Selected Ambient Works, recorded between 1998 and 2003, and consisting of collected instrumentals and vocal pieces. 'Am Cyfan Dy Pethau Prydferth' (the title comes from a badly translated poster spotted in Cardiff, and means For All You Beautiful Things) was released in 2003 and was released in Japan during 2004.
"It's always good to hear original homegrown new music, and Jakokoyak is one of the most different acts to have come onto the Welsh music scene in some time. Certainly cuts like the easy swing of Ar Dy Gefn Bounce, and the beautiful, timeless Home, suggest this is a talent well worth looking out for." BBC Wales Music
During 2005, Jakokoyak embarked on a short tour of Japan supporting the Super Furry Animals and has since performed around the UK to promote the new Flatyre EP, which was released during March 2006 throughout the UK. As well as being heard regularly on BBC Radio Cymru and others, the EP was voted Record of the Week on London's XFm and the ambient tune 'Panic' has been played on even Classic FM. Since releasing Flatyre, he has been gigging regularly accross England and Wales with his band and has recorded a BBC Radio 1 session with Mogwai at the legendary Maida Vale studios in London. Over the summer of 2006, Jakokoyak played numerous festivals including Latitude, Wakestock, Truck and the Eisteddfod. He is currently working on an ambitious new album and will be releasing the material over the summer. It promises to be a new direction for Jakokoyak, so keep listening and keep in touch!
