HADERIAN BOYS is a strange and fun quartet that mixes a lot of musical
styles and influences into a unique brew. After hundreds of gigs, from
biker parties, music pubs and rock festivals to old-folks’ homes and
dances for the mentally handicapped, the boys have learned how to give
any kind of audience a great musical experience, very different from
anything else.It all started ten years ago with guitarist and harmonica player LASSE
LUTHA, who worked with senior citizens and has always believed in
music and singing as a helpful therapy to treat many ailments
including dementia and depression. Lasse wanted to put on a cool show
for the patients and asked his old bassist buddy TOTTE WIMAN to bring
his upright and join in on some old Swedish songs. Lasse and Totte had
played together in several different rock bands ever since the late
1980’s so they were really tight. The first gig was in a church and some more gigs in homes for the
elderly followed. Then HB found a drummer (who played on a washboard,
empty cans, bicycle bells, etc) and took the big step to the stage at
Josef’s House of Blues in Eskilstuna. At the bar was a swarthy
gentleman sucking blissfully on a pipe and carefully monitoring the
weird trio on stage. After the gig, he introduced himself as CSABA
HARKO from Transylvania, a violin player since the age of four… and
the rest is history.A few years later, the drummer quit for personal reasons and something
was needed to beef up the sound. Hey, why not an accordion? Csaba had
played some folk music and had come across a young Finn who was a true
master at his instrument. HARRI TUOVILA was invited to a rehearsal and
everything just clicked into place. The band was a quartet again, with
musical influences from all directions.Lasse loves the blues, the Stones, Clapton, Mayall… while Csaba’s
favorites are guys like Django Reinhardt as well as traditional
Hungarian folk and Gypsy music. Harri is into heavy metal as much as
old Finnish songs, and Totte digs the frantic live energy of 1970’s
British pub rock and new wave acts like Dr. Feelgood and Elvis
Costello. All these factors are mixed together to give well-known old
Swedish songs a totally new and surprising sound. The band is still looking for a new percussionist – let us know if
you
know some jazzy dude who can make things swing on maybe congas or a
washboard, no traditional drums, please. But in the meantime they keep
on gigging as a quartet. No one has complained about the lack of a
steady beat yet (or about anything else). Maybe a fifth band member
will take HADERIAN BOYS to the next level, or maybe this is the
perfect little combo. Time will tell!
