In 2004, DubbleStuff began as a collaboration between Trombonist Nick Finzer and Saxophonist Tyler Gauldin in their small hometown. The music stemmed from their love of jazz, but also their love for the classic funk bands of the ‘70s (like Parliament Funkadelic). This dabbling in the creative process only led the two to continue writing their own original tunes for the group, culminating in a 4 track self-titled EP, DubbleStuff, released in 2005. Following the summer of 2005 both Nick and Tyler began their schooling at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. At Eastman they were able to meet more musicians interested in the kind of music that DubbleStuff was playing, leading to the groups current personnel: pianist Chris Ziemba, bassist Michael Kujawski, and drummer Brian Heveron-Smith.
The growth of the music from this point was exponential. This ensemble recorded DubbleStuff’s first full length album in May of 2006: “This is What You Need (Oh Yes it is)â€, featuring all original tunes from the pen of both Finzer and Gauldin. After the release of the album in December of the same year, DubbleStuff was granted a plethora of performance opportunities around the Rochester, NY area. This included many performances at local bars and clubs, along with performances at some of Rochester’s top festivals (the Lilac Festival, Park Avenue Festival, and the Big City Summer Festival just to name a few), as well as a host of private events (for organizations such as The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and HUGS). DubbleStuff was also granted the opportunity to perform two live radio concerts on Jazz 90.1 FM in Rochester, in the spring of both 2006 and 2007. January of 2008 brought DubbleStuff to Springfield Massachusetts for a session to record an episode of “New Music Showcase†featuring special guest artist, notable New York City drummer Jared Schonig, a 60 minute television show devoted to the presentation of new music to 60+ markets in the northeast, which will be broadcast sometime in the fall of 2008!
The rest of 2008 looks to be bright for the band, with a newly established monthly appearance at local restaurant Tasteology, and a new album to be recorded in the spring! With danceable grooves and fresh improvisation, DubbleStuff provides what few jazz groups can: accessibility and also a higher artistic musical appeal. The band is passionate about composing and performing music that cuts to the core of what is essential for them in their music, the groove. DubbleStuff continues to modernize the world of improvised music, fusing the timelessness of jazz with a fresh breed of funk and fusion.
