Nick is currently in his senior year of study at the Eastman School of Music, pursuing a degree in jazz trombone performance. Nick is an active performer in the Rochester, NY area. Nick can be heard playing with the Rick Holland-Evan Dobbins Little Big Band, the Dave Rivello Ensemble, Orquestra Antonetti, the New Energy Jazz Orchestra, the Po Boys Brass Band, and DubbleStuff. Throughout his career, Nick has been chosen to play in various New York State honor bands and ensembles, and most notably was chosen to play lead trombone with the 2005 Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble. Nick is devoted to the pursuit of advancing and modernizing jazz in the 21st century, by fusing more contemporary styles with traditional jazz-like improvisation.
For the past three years Nick has been working in collaboration with both Wycliffe Gordon and The Commission Project to premiere new music for his sextet, and also for big band. Currently, Nick leads two of his own groups around the Rochester, NY music scene: the Nick Finzer Sextet, and his jazz-funk project, DubbleStuff. In February 2008 Nick premiered a piece for trombone and big band by Wycliffe, "Bloo Finzer" with both the Hilton and Fairport High School Jazz Ensembles. In December 2006, DubbleStuff released their first full-length CD "This is What You Need (Oh Yes it is)".
