Similar to many other 9 to 5 positions, the title of the DJ often has more responsibilities than the job description actually states. This is definitely the case for North Carolina’s own DJ Forge who balances his time between being a seasoned DJ for clubs, mixtapes, and artists in addition to being a prominent producer on the rise. Being a well-rounded DJ and producer only allows more opportunities and Forge has his eyes focused on future legendary status.
Born Jordan Chavis, DJ Forge first established his stature while he hosted his own successful radio mix show (Beneath the Surface) for two years at North Carolina State University’s station, WKNC 88.1 FM. Forge is currently the resident hip hop DJ for one of the Carolina’s most prestigious music venues, Cat’s Cradle. Holding down the tables at Cat’s Cradle has allowed him to open up shows for a long list of heavy hitters such as Clipse, KRS-One, Ghostface, Method Man, GZA, Bone Thugs, BCC, Brother Ali, Masta Ace, Souls of Mischief, Aceyalone, Little Brother, and many others. His party-starting skills were quickly recognized as he landed residencies at several other nightclubs spinning everything from 70’s to 90’s music of various genres. Refusing to be pigeon-holed by being labeled a party DJ, Forge has begun earning a reputation as the go-to guy after lacing exclusive mixtapes for Supastition (Soulspazm/Rawkus), Kaze (Rawkus), and Dan Johns in which he provided his own production on each mixtape as well. Forge has also added the tour DJ title to his repertoire after traveling throughout the US spinning for his former group Forge & Amen and Kaze as well as touring Europe and Australia alongside Supastition.
Never limiting himself to one side of the spectrum, the DJ side of him soon morphed into Forge, the producer. He soon started crafting his own production after years of being influenced by greats such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Diamond D, and several others. He’s handled production duties on three mixtapes and one album for his former group, Forge & Amen, whose single reached 2 on national college radio charts. Forge’s production talent was quickly acknowledged after lacing beats for Legacy (HOJ), Supastition, Sean Boog (HOJ), Kaze, Dan Johns, Block McCloud, and countless others.
DJ Forge’s professional work ethic and versatility as both a DJ and producer continues to gain respect in hip hop and he has every intention to continue solidifying his reputation in the industry. It is all about forging your own path and progressing with every move you make and DJ Forge plans on doing just that.
