Long one of L.A.'s musical treasures, Scott Docherty is a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, poet, and artist. Born on the 20th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th, Docherty has written and performed some of the most heartfelt and beautiful music ever to be born in the Golden State, such as his song "Living Water," a masterpiece of songwriting that is one of the most divinely-inspired songs ever devoted to the divine. Born in beautiful Brooklyn, Docherty was raised in Southern California, where he started playing piano and writing music as a kid.
He worked with the late, great Jack Segal (the lyricist of such standards as "When Sunny Gets Blue" and "Scarlet Ribbons") then the VP of AGAC (the American Guild of Authors and Composers). His first song was published in 1982, and at about the same time he started playing keyboards for many artists and bands, including Paul Zollo & The Ghosters, with whom he wrote many beautiful and fun songs, including "Noelle," "Season of Grace," and the ebullient reggae fest "African Mask." (Zollo and Docherty continue to collaborate to this day, and are working on many songs for their respective upcoming albums.)
Besides his celebrated work as a songwriter, Docherty has often lent his musical prowess to the music of many others, playing piano and organ and keyboards with great artists that include: Nashville's Kate Miner, the Tony Award-winning Scott Waara, Jason Wade of Lifehouse, Mitchell Sigman from Berlin, the internationally acclaimed opera star Juliana Gondek and many others. In 2003 he embarked on a nationwide tour with the 10,000 Maniacs' Mary Ramsey and John Lombardo, as well as backing up Ted Mason of Modern English and The Blue Mockingbirds. In 2005, he began playing organ for the country star Gis Johannson and Big City, proving again that his music straddles the generations and all genres, from rock and funk to blues and reggae and now even country.
But in addition to all of this work, he's well-known in web-circles for his glorious graphic arts and web designs, and also for launching an unprecedented international online amalgamation of artists called the Artist Alliance.
He's presently at work on a new album of his own songs, something his fans and admirers throughout this country and overseas have long been awaiting. He is planning on including a new version of his classic "Living Water," as well as many new songs.
Scott Docherty is a man with a lot of heart - heart that can be profusely felt in all his own music, and in the music of others on which he's played, and in something extraordinary in what is an often cut-throat and competitive industry: his ongoing support and celebration of his fellow musicians. There aren't many artists around like Scott Docherty, and the world's a better place because he's making music in it.
