Orignally from Eugene, Oregon, Aniela Perry has been an active performer and teacher in the Los Angeles area for the past six years. Her incredibly diverse musical background has made her a tremendous asset to a great variety of projects. In addition to being a classically trained cellist, she has an extensive background in improvised styles, string bass, bass guitar and vocal work.
In June of 2005, Aniela participated in the Banff Centre's Summer Arts Festival in Alberta, Canada with her ensemble Enthauptung, which was formed by the composer David Rosenboom. The members of Enthauptung were handpicked to premiere his chamber opera Naked Curvature. At the Banff festival they were coached by cellist Lawrence Lesser and gave performances of Enchanted Preludes by Elliott Carter, L'histoire du Soldat by Stravinsky and a highly successful, un-conducted performance of Schoenberg's masterpiece Pierrot Lunaire. In 2005 Enthauptung was chosen by composer Anne LeBaron to perform the music for her new opera Wet, where Aniela showed off her doubling skills on cello and string bass.
Aniela has worked closely with other contemporary composers such as Gavin Bryars, Vinny Golia, Jim Fox, Pauline Oliveros, David Ozab, James Tenney, and John Zorn. In October 2005 Ms. Perry performed in RedCat's sold out concert, Cellos, at the Disney Concert Hall, where she was the soloist in Messagesquisse by Pierre Boulez.
Feeling the need to return to her rock roots, Aniela very eagerly accepted the offer to tour with the band Cursive. During this time, an ambitious attempt to play musical Twister will take place when she participates in a master classe of legendary new-music cellist Rohan de Saram and performs a long overdue solo cello concert in Los Angeles in the fall. Every summer, 2006 being no exception, Aniela volunteers to teach bass and coach bands at Portland, Oregon's Rock and Roll Camp for Girls. Every year this proves to be an eye-opening and deeply fulfilling experience for Ms. Perry and she hopes she will be able to spend her future summer vacations there.
In addition to her broad and varied performance experiences, Aniela dabbles a bit with composition/arranging and various experiments with things that sound nice to her. She calls this project Darlingtonia .
Not "darling" + "tonia" which sounds kind of trailer-park, but rather the carniverous pitcher plant indigenous to an area of Oregon she is fond of.
