Knots confound, knots unite, knots are paradoxical symbols of humanity’s ability to overcome obstacles and enjoin disparate things together. To dare the knot, one must present a greater strength and ingenuity than previously witnessed. Dared The Knot is a band that fuses electronic beats with cutting edge rock, creating music which journeys into new sonic territories.
Todd Bowes conceived of the band and began writing material in early 2005. He is DTK’s chief songwriter, singer, synth programmer, and rhythm guitarist. He’s been playing in bands since he was in middle school. He started out playing bass and drums in metal bands and then guitar, keyboards and vocals in goth bands in his native Massachusetts. He released an independent CD with goth/trip-hop/industrial band From Angels to Ashes, and an EP with his "ethnotrance" project Planeswalker. After years of musical adventures that took him from Springfield to Seoul, Todd landed in New York City with the idea for a new kind of band.
In Summer 2005, Todd joined forces with lead guitarist Derek Martin. Derek had just moved to New York from Houston, TX where he was playing lead guitar for a heavy, alternative rock band called The Ambience Community. Derek has his roots in the blues, having taught himself to play harmonica when he was in his teens. He played guitar in bands in high school and in college and jammed with as many different people as he could. He is drawn to dark, weird and atmospheric sounds as well as fiery and intense virtuosity; textural & ambient sounds, as well as traditional lead guitar wailing and shredding. He has not received formal training, but he has studied music theory and history a great deal on his own.
DTK recorded their first demo with Boston-based producer Chris Brown in the spring of 2006.
Bassist Matt Nodland joined the group in Fall 2006. A veteran of the Connecticut metal scene, Matt has been playing for just shy of a decade. He cut his teeth with such bands as Strained Existence and most recently with Hartford ’s Circus of Dead Squirrels, opening for the likes of KMFDM, Sister Machine Gun and Mushroomhead. Matt matches his precise finger-style attack to DTK’s already monstrous sound, strengthening the foundation of the band.
Phil Petrie was added to the lineup at the tail end of 2006 after Matt heard his solo project Ex Machina (Check out myspace.com/exmachinae ). Matt and Phil know each other from working at the same video-editing firm. Phil adds razor sharp synth riffs and alien soundscapes to DTK, as well as his skills with video. On stage, he is the nerve center of the band, controlling the arrangement with his laptop and his keyboard. Influenced by Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, and the big Iowa sky, Phil moved to NYC after earning a degree in music education to live in the big city and make it in music.
In January 2007, the band’s long time loft/ rehearsal space was transformed by Derek and a group of friends into the Last Resort Art Space, an intimate new venue in Astoria, Queens. DTK is happy to be an integral part of this project. DTK was one of 5 bands to perform at Last Resort’s first show, and Phil DJ’d at a another show, spinning a mix of interesting electronica and Ex Machina originals. When they venture forth from their Last Resort digs, one can often catch a glimpse of the band getting a drink after practice at the Astoria Beer Garden and enjoying the culinary delights of The Taco Truck while loitering in Athena Park (if the cops don’t harass us).
