About Me

Tinariwen

This page emphasises the links between American blues & Malian music. Toumani Diabate says Malian music is not blues & not jazz. The link is romanticised- I doubt that african slaves brought their music to America without it being filtered through ballads, gospel and jazz. However, there are similarities. Malian artists have heard John Lee Hooker and Jimi Hendrix but the blues is reminiscent of their traditional music.
