Still facing foward in a backward world.

About Me

My first musical instruments were my mom's pots and pans when I was two years old. My parents weren’t too keen on that or the fact that I kept trying to turn on the stereo, but they say they knew early on that I'd grow up to be a musician. I started playing flute when I was ten, though they tried to steer me towards more "masculine" instruments like the trumpet and drums. I knew where they were coming from, but I couldn't see choosing an instrument for any other reason than liking it. And it's one of the few times I can ever remember putting my foot down as a child. I loved the sound of the flute then and I still do. Today, I am happy to be able to say that I am an award-winning multi-flutist and composer. I specialize in instruments of bamboo, glass, tin and cedar as well as the modern western silver flute. I earned a bachelor of music degree in flute performance from the University of South Carolina where, as a sophomore, I won the national first prize in the collegiate woodwinds division of the Music Teacher's National Association competition. With advanced degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Columbia University, I taught flute and advanced aural skills at Iowa State University and served as piccolo soloist with the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. Today, I am a performing artist member of Thursday Musical and a two time prize winning finalist for the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for Performing Artists. As a composer, my collaborations have included The Florence Ballet Co., members of the West Point Band and Zeitgeist (the first of which was as winner of the Eric Stokes Song Competition). I'm hoping to meet people here who want to perform or dance to my music or people in the area to perform with, but old and new friendships are my top priority. I'd also like to meet composers who have written for flute or would like to. Some of my music is available from Alry Publications, Etc. Everthing else, you can get from me. Thanks for stopping by.

Why I Dont Watch American Idol

Louise clutched her chest at me and made a loud gasping noise like she was having a coronary.   "Are you serious?  You've never heard of David Archuleta?"   "Um, does he own that pizza...

The Laser and Eye (part 8)

I think I'm going to start telling everyone I got "Lasik".  People know what that is.  When I tell them I got PRK, then I get stuck having to explain the difference.  And it's already g...

The Laser and Eye (part 7)

My vision is much improved today over yesterday.  It's still not as good as it was the first couple of days, but my eyeglasses are overcorrecting it now, so I'm no longer able to wear them. ...

The Laser and Eye (part 6)

They say that it's normal for your eyesight to "fluctuate" after PRK surgery.  Now, I know what that means.  Yesterday, I lost my near vision.  I could see far away fine, but last night...

The Laser and Eye (part 5)

I wasn't supposed to, but I drove myself to the follow-up visit this morning. I thought I could see pretty well and I figured I'd save myself the $60 or so I would have spent on a taxi. Minnesota Eye ...

The Laser and Eye (part 4, post op)

I can't believe I actually went through with the PRK surgery, but so far, I'm really glad I did.  This is how it went down. The first thing they did after I walked in the door was take my money....

The Laser and Eye (part 3)

I think I'm ready. Tomorrow is the day of my first ever surgery and I think I'm ready. In fact, I think I researched and thought the heck out of this decision and now I just want to get it done. ...

The Laser And Eye (part 2)

Postponing my PRK surgery because of my concert last month, left me with more time to think about what I'm about to do than a lot of people. Unfortunately, I did what is probably the worst thing one c...

The Cup

Not too long ago, I was getting a cup of coffee out of the vending machine at work.  I put in my sixty cents, selected the French Vanilla and waited, albeit impatiently, for my coffee.  ...
