Sounds Like: ..Ulla Miilmann was soloist in the eclectic, technically demanding and fun “Concert for Flute and Orchestra” by Jacques Ibert. The virtuous soloist left the audience breathless with her exquisite dark sound, especially in the usually rather unpleasant lower register.
…Right from the beginning of the silk like dolce and gentle dictation one had to prick ones ears. And in intimate cooperation with the pianos supple imaginative chamber-playing, the flute dug into the great piece’ (C. Franck: Sonata. red.) moods and structures with enormous flowing phrasing, living and expanding tone and above all, a certain and fascinating sense of earnest late-romantic declamation, whether it was about non-bodily floating, smiling grace or intense pathos. In Prokofiev’s, also very favorite Sonata in D-major the light changed. The air got sharper, the mind brighter, the rhythmic attention was in front without being intruding. Lyrical elegance and graceful line-artistry was in the high-seat – from subtle, light ironic sweetness to the blue-eyed innocence of the andante. But also the hazardous, spirit-full scherzo was performed with cheerful bravura. The concert was indeed a pleasure from beginning to end.

Intelligent Brilliance
It is rare that the Danish Radio Orchestras own principal players are in front of the orchestra, but with a principal flutist of Ulla Miilmanns caliber there is no reason to go across the brook to fetch water. Iberts “Concerto for Flute and Orchestra” is elegant, eloquent and gently perfumed. But Ulla Miilmann succeeded in bringing out considerable measures of melancholy and reflection between the virtuosic artistry and lively rhythms. (Copenhagen, Feb. 2008)
Flutist Ulla Miilmann was the great experience at this week concert
Ulla Miilmann was soloist in Iberts “Concerto for Flute and Orchestra” and she was outstanding. Miilmann played with great surplus and build up an almost meditating atmosphere where every phrase was passed on with a presence and musicality that left you in a state of pure bliss. In the lively third movement Miilmann not only played the music but toyed with Iberts many difficult and challenging passages and made them sound like the easiest thing in the world. (Copenhagen, Feb. 2008)
Ulla Miilmann captured with natural authority the space on the podium. With her characteristic full sound and her extreme physical and expressive playing, she set the orchestra a dynamic match. She undisguised enjoyed going to the limit on the instrument. The second movement contained all contrasts and colors: crystal clear light and gloomy darkness. Depth, intensiveness and desperate scream. From here on to the spirited finale. In the cadences the flute returned to the extremes- from hysteria to breathless silence. (Copenhagen, feb. 2008)
AMERICAN GRAMMY 2006
Ulla Miilmann nominated in the category Best Instrumental Soloist Performance
There are several remarkable things about this release. The recording quality is astounding. The 4 concertos themselves are very rewarding in their wide range and musical content and the superb playing which is beyond criticism. (SA-CD.net)
(Dansk Musik Tidsskrift)
There is much enjoyable music in all four works, splendidly performed in first-rate sound. (Nordic Sounds)
There..s a likeness to Edward Gregson..s wind concerti at times: and that, meaning tunefullness, idiomatic writing and lively ideas, is a compliment indeed. (Robert Beale, Manchester Evening News)
Virile recording quality...wonderfully provocative writing deeply harnessed to romantic models but breathing a wholly comtemperary ozone. (Musicweb International)
