One of the pioneers of DC's house music scene, DJ Dub aka James Graham Aviance has been a nightclub dj for over 29 years.Originally from New York and a graduate of NYU, DJ Dub was inspired by the Paradise Garage, Zanzibar, and The Club House. He settled in Washington DC and quickly became one of the biggest influences in the developing house music scene in the 1980s. As a single father, DJ Dub worked the “9 to 5 grind” to support himself and son Christopher. He always found time each week to follow his passion for house music, often working a 50 hour week then spinning 12 plus hour sets on the weekends. His biggest influences include Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries and Shep Pettibone.DJ Dub's contributions to DC’s house music scene are too numerous to list! Some of the highlights include founding Washington DC’s first warehouse party during the 80s, to his ground breaking WPGC-FM radio mix show (House Music After-Hours) to being an assistant director of O.M.A.P. record pool. DJ Dub was a contributing music reviewer for DMA magazine and he has participated as a panelist on many forums at The Winter Music Conference since its inception twenty two years ago. His dj residencies throughout Washington DC have included Safari, Metropolis, Tracks DC, The Ritz, Bohemian Caverns, Badlands, Aki, Modern, and Sanctuary to name a select few. He has also has been a guest at Numbers (DC), Crystal City Underground (VA), The Club House (DC), The Pier / East Side (DC), Mars/La Muse (NYC), Chapter III (DC), Kilimanjaro (DC), Fifth Column (DC), The Vault (DC), Andalu (DC), Club Red (DC), Cloud 9 (Rehobeth Beach), Boom Boom Room (Chicago), Nation (DC) and Good Love (Baltimore). DJ Dub has also donated his time and talent to raise funds for many good causes such as the Boarder Babies Project, Life Beat and Whitman Walker Clinic.Following his love of music and vinyl, DJ Dub left the corporate world ten years ago to work at 12” Dance Records in Dupont Circle, as the head buyer. In 2002, DJ Dub and 2 partners bought 12” Dance Records and opened DJ Hut, DC’s premier record and DJ equipment store. For four years, DJ Dub has held a Wednesday and Saturday night residency at Mie N Yu in Georgetown. DJ Dub and Mie N Yu produce a seasonal CD series that is complimentary to guests. These CD mixes have been featured on XM Radio “The Move” on the Monday night show “The Launch Pad”. With DJ Hut, his current residencies and the CD series, DJ Dub works to keep the house music beat pulsing through Washington DC. DJ Dub has touched the lives of party people, dancers, djs past and present and music lovers in DC’s historically rich nightlife culture. DJ Dub and house music have brought people of all races, sexual orientations and walks of live together through the love of music. He is particularly proud of the community that house music has created in Washington DC.His extraordinary vinyl record collection includes classic rock, funk, disco, reggae, 80s, hip hop and house music. DJ Dub is known for his seamless mixing and creative programming which maintains the energy throughout the night. This is heard in his CDs which are recorded in one single session without any computer editing. He passed along the art of mixing to several students – DJ Dub is most proud of student and son DJ Know1 (Drum & Bass). Surprisingly to most people in the club scene, DJ Dub does not drink, smoke or do any drugs. He is fueled completely and totally by the music!DJ Dub’s modest and humbleness prevents many of us from knowing the true extent of the magnitude of his contributions. DJ Dub has developed a scene, created a community and works daily to keep house music moving forward. He has passed up many opportunities throughout the years in order to take care of his son or to give the chance to another DJ. Everyone involved in writing this bio agrees DJ Dub deserves an opportunity to succeed doing what he loves!
