BRUCE GERTZ QUINTET

About Me

The Bruce Gertz Quintet began it's journey in 1991 with John Abercrombie, Guitar, Joey Calderazzo, Piano, Jerry Bergonzi, Saxophone, Adam Nussbaum, Drums, and Bruce Gertz, Bass. We recorded our 1st CD, Blueprint which was released in 1992. Two of the gigs to follow were concerts at the Somerville Theatre and UNH, Manchester which were a triple threat. 1. It was a CD release gig for Blueprint, 2. It was a performance fulfilling a National Endowment for the Arts, Jazz Performance grant and 3. It was recorded live, digitally to become the next CD, Third Eye (RAM). After the success of Third Eye Ram Records agreed to record Discovery Zone. In between were a number of gigs in Boston and New York. A 4th CD, Red Handed was recorded in 1998 for Double Time with Bruce Barth replacing Calderazzo who was unavailable for the session. During the same years and up until the present other projects took place involving many old friends and great players. The Bruce Gertz/Ken Cervenka Quintet recorded Shut Wide Open (Double Time) and Mick Goodrick recorded Sunscreams for RAM. Jerry Bergonzi recorded to CD's with Bruce for Red, Inside Out and Tilt, and On Again for Ram. Also Jerry Bergonzi, Bruce Gertz and Bob Kaufman recorded 2 CD's for Whaling City Sound, The Line Between in 2002 and Dreaming Out Loud in 2004. During the 1980's Bruce and Jerry recorded 2 LP's for Plug Records, Con Brio and Gonz, Uranian Undertow. We decided to make a go of it and started an indie label, Not Fat Records. We released 3 additional recordings and toured Australia where the final live record on the label, Caught In The Act was recorded. Now Bruce Gertz has started a new indie label, Open Mind Jazz, for the groups music. Go To Openmindjazz.com or Brucegertz.com for updates and to buy stuff or book us!
