I'm the Angela Shelton who made the documentary Searching for Angela Shelton. Making this movie opened my eyes to a epidemic of sexual and domestic violence when I interviewed other women with my name and discovered that 70% of them had been survivors of rape, childhood sexual abuse and/or domestic violence. Then I met an Angela Shelton who tracked sexual predators and lived in the same town as my father who abused me and my step siblings for years. And we arrived to her town on Father's Day!! She lived only a few miles from my father so I confronted my dad on Father's Day morning on his porch before he went to church. I thought this movie was going to be my directorial debut that I made quickly over the summer but it ended up changing my whole life, forcing me to heal, and it created a movement of healing.
If 70% of the Angela Shelton's had been victims of abuse, what does that say about women in general? I could have picked any name. This movie does not mean don't name your child Angela or that every Angela Shelton was a victim, it means that this kind of abuse is an epidemic. We all know someone who has been a victim of abuse or trauma. The whole experience of making this movie just got too weird to be weird anymore. The Angela Sheltons kept repeating that everything happens for a reason and now I think there must be a reason you landed on this store. Please buy a copy of the movie and watch it. It has a happy ending because I'm still alive! Most of the Angelas were abused but then most of them also healed and now lead joyful lives - including me! So many people asked me about my own life story that I wrote the book Finding Angela Shelton.
My book Finding Angela Shelton is out! Please check out what the supporters are doing at FindingAngelaShelton.com and PLEASE order the book and join a team to spread the word! Please order a copy of my DVD. A very helpful thing to do is to buy a copy and donate it to your local library so that everyone can see it. As every survivor heals and moves into a joyful life, we are breaking the cycle of abuse for good!
On the issue of trauma (that my movie and my book face) - we are still living in the age of great denial! Dark family secrets and silence is going to continue until we lift the veil of denial as a whole society. My film helps breaks the silence and my book help breaks the cycle. My book faces denial head on. I talk about how I faced my abuse, my self-abuse, how I healed and how I broke the cycle of abuse in my life. My book calls for all victims to stop the cycle of abuse and lead joyful lives. Joy and Violence cannot co-exist.
A lot of people seem to be scared of my book and do not want to face it. Those who are ready to heal and break the cycle of abuse love my book. Many teachers are using it as required reading in their classes too! If you are a survivor and are worried to face it, just feel the book, and then jump ahead and read the last chapter.
I fell into the well of hell while making this movie and learned a lot about myself and others. That is why my new show Stirring Up Trouble (in production) is going to address a wide variety of issues that the modern empowered woman faces. (and men, we love the men)
