Well, well, well, I finally figured out how to offer you a little bit of information about me, David D, so now I'm faced with the daunting challenge of what to say and how to say it! Hmmmm....guess I should start by saying that I have always been a writer and I have always loved putting words together in some form or another. In my "Jack of All Trades" employment history, I've written radio ads, radio news stories, TV feature stories, news releases, freelance newspaper articles and the list goes on. I've worked in such far flung outposts as Wickford, Rhode Island, Waterloo, Iowa, Durham, New Hampshire and San Francisco. So how did I get the urge to write songs? Somehow, somewhere along the way, I started hearing melodies in my head. Better that than voices! Lyrics accompanied those melodies, though at the time, I didn't know anything about writing a song. That took years. Course, I'm still learning.I came out of the songwriting "closet" in San Francisco, where I had moved from Boston. I began buying books about songwriting and read them voraciously. At some point, I found out about the No. Cal. Songwriters' Assn (now the West Coast Songwriters organization) and eagerly joined. If you're in the Bay Area, and you're a songwriter, you really need to check them out!Back in the early nineties, I took a huge leap of faith and moved to Nashville, sight unseen. Crazy? Maybe. But I don't regret it, despite some "hard times" I've known here. No, I haven't had any major cuts, but I have made some major friends here in Twangtown. I've even had some of my songs recorded by independent artists such as Charlie Allen, Dani Ashworth, Timmy G and Lindsey Bostick, among others. One of my biggest creative milestones since hitting town was getting international airplay on a song called "The Reunion (of Johnny and June)", a song recorded by Jason Howard on Realtwang Records. Jason actually titled the song and helped me with several lines. It was even performed by Jason at a special Johnny Cash tribute show that featured Tommy Cash, Johnny's brother, who told us that of all the "tribute" songs he received in the aftermath of Johnny and June's passing, he liked "The Reunion" the best. Speaking of "the best," please check out the amazing Stephanie Brownlee below and Timmy G, the artist who's voice you hear on "16 Sunset Lane".
