William Shakespeare’s notoriously turbulent tale of prophecy, betrayal and murder will be further roiled in Steven Shields’ bold re-imagining of Macbeth, opening at the Ark Theatre on Thursday, October 23rd.
The rudiments remain the same as Scottish Thane Macbeth’s lust for power, fueled by the conniving of his ambitious wife, leads to regicide, usurpation and war. In this ritualized re-telling, the mystical prophecies that inspire Macbeth’s tumble into madness and depravity are provided by a mysterious priestess and her congregation of robed adherents. Is her flock predetermining the fate of those they encounter, or do they merely open the door to iniquity and allow Macbeth to charge through? This Ark edition layers yet more mystery and wonder onto Shakespeare’s distinctly absorbing classic.
