To celebrate the release of ‘The Projectionist’ EP we played in a dilapidated cinema called The Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford:
***The Picture Palace opened on 25th February 1911. It was designed by local architect John R. Wilkins. It operated until the early 1920's when it was closed and became a furniture store. It re-opened as the Penultimate Picture Palace on 18th July 1976. Above the name board was the cinema's motive; a giant cut-out of Al Jolson with hands outstretched as seen in the first talkie "The Jazz Singer" (the fibre glass hands were designed by scupture John Buckley who also designed the new door handles shaped as Mae West's lips. The original 1911 pay box was retained and it began to operate as an Art House cinema called the Penultimate Picture Palace. Sadly it did subsequently close down, permanently. However, in 1995 the Penultimate Picture Palace was proudly reopened as ... the Ultimate Picture Palace.***

- Subba-cultcha.com

"A Silent Film have more of a sense of urgency and excitement about them than any piano-focal indie band has any right to. There are sharp, jangly guitars, soaring vocals, and curiously-engaging lyrics about escaping to the eastern border and guns in violin cases and suchlike. 'Sleeping Pills' is very promising stuff..."

- playlouder.com

"Combining the grandiose bombast of Keane with the more down- tempo stripped back staccato of ‘Pablo Honey’ era Radiohead, A Silent Film’s debut EP marks the premiere performance of a band whose promise points towards a future blockbuster. They won’t be silent for long..."

– The Fly

"The band won a coveted slot on the festival's new BBC Introducing Stage, after being picked by Radio 1's Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq. They were nominated by Tim Bearder and Dave Gilyeat, presenters of BBC Radio Oxford's essential local music show The Download, who have faithfully championed the band, along with local music mag Nightshift..."

– Oxford Mail

"Gently weaving intricately constructed tales, this DIY piano-led quartet from Oxford produce larger than life cinematic soundscapes, rolling from trance-like distortion to superbly focused piano and electric guitar hooks. Soflty experimental and thoughtfully worded, this is an intriguing debut..."

– Rock Sound

"Assured, complex and intelligent, this is a band that seems poised on the brink of greatness. There’s a famous George Jean Nathan quote that claims wishing for movies to be articulate is about as sensible as wishing for drama to be silent. Offering articulate drama, A Silent Film prove that it needn’t be either or..."
