The first Ukelele Cabaret was launched at the Lincoln Lounge, Kings Cross, London, on 20 November 2007, as part of the Arrivals Undercover celebrations for the opening of St Pancras International and the arrival of the first Eurostar from Paris. In honour of the occasion we played Take the A Train and La Vie En Rose on a dozen ukeleles. The night was a charming and impromtu feast of ukelele delights, including performances by host Tricity Vogue, special guests Lana and Rosa Conrad, along with unexpected and jawdroppingly spectacular open mic appearances by Cousin Alice, Kath Tait, Nick and Rufus.
So winning and wonderful was the entire evening that the Lincoln Lounge manager Johnboy has invited us to return in the New Year and make the Ukelele Cabaret a regular event. There could be no better home for an evening of lovingly offbeat acoustic entertainment than this quirky but comfortable bar with its book exchange, mural and wobbly fixtures.
Come and be friends, and if you'd like information on when the next Ukelele Cabaret will be, or you'd like to come and perform in the open mic spot, send us a message and say hello.
"The ukulele is a noble little instrument... anyone serious about music will eventually come to play one." - Bob Brozman
(According to the dictionary we consulted, you can spell the name of our favourite instrument either ukelele or ukulele. We're going with the first one because it fits more naturally with the popular abbreviation, "uke". And because there's already a ukulele cabaret in New York, and we don't want to step on anyone's toes.)
