Tess The New Musical

Music, Book and Lyrics by Annie Pasqua

About Me

Tess is a full length, musical rock opera based on the 1891 Thomas Hardy novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles with Music, Book and Lyrics by Annie Pasqua.

How can a life be cursed? Tess is the haunting musical tale of Tess Durbeyfield, a young, spirited girl who is violated by her employer, forsaken by her true love, and judged by the harsh Victorian society in which she lives. Tess finds herself desperately torn between two men in a struggle that tests the power of love and the power of destiny. As a descendant of the once mighty d’Urbervilles, Tess is fated to live out her family’s ancient curse but finds immeasurable blessings along the way to her ultimate fate, which perhaps, has yet to be written.
ANNIE PASQUA (Music, Book and Lyrics) Annie is an award winning singer, pianist, and composer whose performance credits include Carnegie Hall, Nassau Coliseum as well as an appearance on Good Morning America with Kenny G. Recently, she was a winner in VH1's "Song of the Year" International Competition. Annie started playing the piano at age four, taught by her mother, Susan and by age seven, Annie was composing pieces for the piano. In 1988, Annie began studying classical piano with Professor Morton Estrin, who also taught such notables as Billy Joel and Deborah Gibson. That same year, Annie was honored for her original piano composition My Proud Russian Heritage with First Place in the New York State PTA Reflections Competition, a title she would hold for the next six years. In 1994, Annie's composing skills would be nationally recognized with the PTA Reflections National Scholarship for her orchestral work Lullaby. Attending NYU on a Musical Scholarship, Annie continued her studies in piano, voice, and composition. It was here that Annie first began writing music for Tess, studying composition with Dr. Joseph Church, conductor and musical director of Broadway's Tommy and The Lion King. Annie also developed her film scoring talents, earning the Tisch School of the Arts Award for Best Film Score for her work on the film Portrait. Annie graduated first in her class from NYU in 1998, with a B.S. in Music Education and went on to receive her Masters in Composition from Queens College. Annie was accepted into the BMI Lehman Engel Music Theater Writing Workshop in Manhattan as a Composer/Lyricist, working with Skip Kennon, Richard Enquist, and Maury Yeston as a member of the advanced workshop.

Annie has been on faculty at the Usdan Center for the Performing Arts for over 13 years as the Musical Director of the Theater Repertory Company. Annie has also composed music for television, notably PBS’s JFK Remembered with Walter Cronkite and Don Hewitt and the title theme for Act Two with Newsday as well as various promos for In Demand. In addition to her composing credits, Annie is a highly sought after musical director and in 2006, Annie musical directed A Million Tomorrows (formerly Wallenberg) for the New York Music Theater Festival. She later went on to work with show creators Laurence Holzman, Felicia Needleman, and Emmy Award winning director, Annette Jolles on That Time of the Year which recently completed a successful run at the York Theatre. Annie is thrilled to be focusing on her first love, composing and is working hard on TESS, the musical she was destined to write.

Influences: Tess had its beginnings in the summer of 1996. Annie Pasqua, then preparing for her junior year at NYU, decided to heighten her knowledge of literature by reading some classics before returning for the fall semester. Annie’s mother recommended a book she’d read in her high school days - Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Upon opening the book and seeing her mother’s name written on the inside cover, Annie felt as if the book had chosen her.Always being a composer on the prowl for material, she pondered, “could this be a musical?” and proceeded to audition the book as she read on. It didn’t disappoint. Annie found herself completely drawn into the story of how an average girl could have her life unraveled by a string of seemingly harmless decisions.Back at school, the first piece of music that emerged was "Resurrection". With a harmonic palette and overall feel that Annie felt was right for the project, she found herself inspired to keep writing. At the end of that junior year, "Resurrection" was performed as the finale of Annie’s jury recital by fellow NYU musical theater students and was extremely well received.Annie continued to develop songs for Tess with guidance from mentor, Dr. Joseph Church, (conductor and musical director of Broadway's Tommy and The Lion King). In the summer of 1997, the first official Tess recording was made in Annie’s parents’ basement. A few months later, Annie was accepted into the BMI Musical Theater Writing Workshop as a composer/lyricist, where she continued to explore her talents as a composer/lyricist.In June 2006, Tess was presented as a staged reading at Christ Lutheran Church in New Hyde Park and in June 2007, Tess premiered at the Spiegel Theater, presented by Hofstra’s Gray Wig where it played to sold out audiences. In November 2007, Tess received high praise at its staged reading at the York Theatre and creator, Annie Pasqua looks forward to future New York workshops. She still takes all of her mother's reading recommendations.
Sounds Like: If Puccini, The Who, John Williams, Dan Fogelberg, The Beatles, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Ennio Morricone all got together to jam.
