Influences: Tess had its beginnings in the summer of 1996. Annie Pasqua, then preparing for her junior year at NYU, decided to heighten her knowledge of literature by reading some classics before returning for the fall semester. Annie’s mother recommended a book she’d read in her high school days - Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Upon opening the book and seeing her mother’s name written on the inside cover, Annie felt as if the book had chosen her.Always being a composer on the prowl for material, she pondered, “could this be a musical?†and proceeded to audition the book as she read on. It didn’t disappoint. Annie found herself completely drawn into the story of how an average girl could have her life unraveled by a string of seemingly harmless decisions.Back at school, the first piece of music that emerged was "Resurrection". With a harmonic palette and overall feel that Annie felt was right for the project, she found herself inspired to keep writing. At the end of that junior year, "Resurrection" was performed as the finale of Annie’s jury recital by fellow NYU musical theater students and was extremely well received.Annie continued to develop songs for Tess with guidance from mentor, Dr. Joseph Church, (conductor and musical director of Broadway's Tommy and The Lion King). In the summer of 1997, the first official Tess recording was made in Annie’s parents’ basement. A few months later, Annie was accepted into the BMI Musical Theater Writing Workshop as a composer/lyricist, where she continued to explore her talents as a composer/lyricist.In June 2006, Tess was presented as a staged reading at Christ Lutheran Church in New Hyde Park and in June 2007, Tess premiered at the Spiegel Theater, presented by Hofstra’s Gray Wig where it played to sold out audiences. In November 2007, Tess received high praise at its staged reading at the York Theatre and creator, Annie Pasqua looks forward to future New York workshops. She still takes all of her mother's reading recommendations.
