For 2 hours every Saturday night on BBC 6 Music we bypass CDs, pluggers and record companies and play new tunes by upcoming artists direct from their own web pages. MP3's may not sound the same as compact disc, but so what. Even Radio 1 went out in mono on medium wave until 1994. If sound quality had been a consideration, punk rock would never have happened. What really do matter is the quality of the songwriting and performance. Much as I like the idea of music straight from the coal face, there's an awful lot of dross out there in unsigned cyberspace. So for quality control we depend on tips from 6 Music listeners - generally a discerning bunch - via a dedicated web page to make sure absolutely everything gets heard. We judge the tracks entirely on what comes out of the speakers, not on how many fans a band has, or what the NME says about them. If it sounds good to us, we'll play it.Ladies and Gentlemen - your recommendations please - at bbc.co.uk/6musicintroducing .
