With a musical history of boundary pushing, from his early days moving crowds with the theatrically-charged hiphop crew, MetaBass'n'Breath (peep their cassette, captured in DJ Shadow's collection, on the artwork to The Private Press) to his more recent overseas touring and recording with the shamanic and 'survival guide' sounds of Heavyweight Dub Champion, Elf continues to shift the frame with Ethereal Lotus Fleet in a manner thought-provoking, confrontational and stylistically diverse.LA-born Elf Tranzporter (aka Marlon Porter) first arrived in Australia in 1992 and wasted no time in immersing himself in the then infant local scene. From 1994 to '99, the MetaBass crew he co-founded, released a number of underground classics including 'Life and Times of A Beatboxer' (Bomb Records) along side extensive touring both in Australia as well as the USA to triumphant audience responses and acclaim.A true all-rounder, Elf uses his skills as a hip hop performer to conduct workshops and tutor disadvantaged and 'high-risk' youth at schools, community events, and juvenile justice centres in both urban and outback environments. The connection, respect and community involvement Elf has fostered over the years has managed to forge a depth the to sound of the album via the intent, topics, and overall tone Elf employs within this 'heart-core' driven work. Whilst lyrically combining descriptive story-telling with sharp socio-political commentary, 'Ethereal Lotus Fleet' also, manages to deliver a dub-laced sonic arsenal hailing a stellar supporting cast to boot.
In 'How we Roll' Maya Jupiter drops slick head-nodding raps, perfectly complemented by DJ Wasabi's grinding beats and cuts, whilst 'Custom Religion' rocks Middle Eastern beats with Elf's own sharp critique of profit-driven spiritual mediation. In 'Think Tent' he takes aim at blatant hypocrisy, displaying his trademark brilliant rhyming skills:...I think therefore I sink to the level of a delinquent/Let me invite you back to my 'think tent' serve you in a cup and deconstruct your contents while we drink it/Link it, before I get too academic with this theory/Throw in a VB so all you ocker MC's hear me/Take over your TV 'til all the PC wankers fear me/Tune you in turn you on like some kind of Timothy Leary/Or, simply 'drop out' state clearly it's eerie the way we label eachother/Much too confining most of the time when there's so much more to discover...Production and guest appearances from Joelistics and Count Bounce from TZU, FortKnight's DJ Wasabi, vocal divas Vida-Sunshyne and Supina (Miso), local dub and dancehall vibe master, Mista Savona, along with many others all rounding off the killer album, with roots and reggae influences spiced with turntablism and beat-boxing.Live, Elf is unmissable. Dropping a uniquely conscious blend of 'sojourn-ear' lyricism; beat boxing and freestyle poetics. Over the years he has shared stages with international acts including Allen Ginsberg
(RIP), Rock Steady Crew, Jurassic 5, Nihtin Sawney (UK), Zion I, Spearhead, Ozomatli, Black Star, Jeru the Damaja, as well as Black Thought and Malik B of the Roots.Along local lines, Elf has also performed live with some of Australia's finest musicians, producers, crews, including: Combat Wombat, John Butler Trio, True Live, TZU, Illzilla, Diafrix, Mista Savona, Fortknight
Productions, Miso and even an Australian High Court Judge - Justice Michael Kirby. Currently in mode with his new live unit eLotusEtheric, DJ Wasabi & Elf will begin touring nationally throughout the remainder of '07 into next year, taking in all major cities nationally to promote the new album 'Ethereal Lotus Fleet'.
