"Enchanting and passionate" (Tall Poppy Records, 2007) singer/songwritier Laura Smith fuses her innate pop sensibility with jazz and soul influences to create a fresh but familiar sound. Her 2006 demo garnered two Island Music Award nominations: "Female Artist of the Year" and "Song of the Year." Her most recent demo, with producer Bill Bell (Jason Mraz, Tom Cochrane) at the helm, was recorded in June 2007 and features the Vancouver-based artist on vocals, piano, trumpet, glockenspiel, and clarinet.
In her blossoming career as a songwriter, Laura has collaborated with Vancouver writers Dave Pickell, Winston, and Niko Friesen, as well as German/Namibian Hip-Hop artist Ees and American songwriter/producer DJ Harry (Veronica Mars, the OC.)
In addition to her work as a solo artist, Laura lends her instrumental prowess and versatility to the up and coming Vancouver indie rock band Said the Whale and Fuzzy Logic/Catbird artist Prairie Cat. An experienced studio musician, her piano, vocals, and trumpet playing can be heard on various recordings produced in Vancouver and Victoria. Ever dedicated to her craft, Laura continues to hone her technical skills while completing a diploma in Jazz Studies at North Vancouver's Capilano College.
