I think the "About Me" part of this is pretty complete as far as interests go. I still go see bands a decent amount and still get really excited about new albums, no matter how much owning a magazine tried to beat that out of me. I'm extra super excited about new movies now, though.
Most of my interests are kind of solitary things, though, so I don't have much opportunity to meet the ladies, as it were. I'm getting out a lot more now than I have for a while, but it still hasn't yielded the intended result of more ladies-meeting...
I'd like to meet:
Okay, after several years of attempting the "I'll make no effort and just meet someone randomly" method, I'm realizing that it's not really working. But I'm also realizing that I have managed to at least partially get my shit together during that time, so I guess it was good. So I'm going to go ahead and say without qualifying it, what I am actually looking for in a woman. Gulp...
I'm not a one-size-fits-all date, by any means, and it's silly to pretend
otherwise. I don't really fit in with the normal folk: I tend to put
priority on my creative pursuits (lately: designing album art and shirts
for bands, writing music on my ratty acoustic guitar, which is making me
happy), my sense of humor manages to be both dry and a little disturbed,
and you would literally have to either pay me a tidy sum or tie me down to
get me to watch a televised sporting event. An example of me: I recently
won my battle this year to refuse to change my watch over during the
entirety of Daylight Savings -- if you find that amusing, we might be
compatible. If you find that hopelessly weird, scroll down and hit the
"next" button.
But then I don't exactly fit in with the alternative culture either: I'm
pretty darn responsible and have a strong work ethic (even if it's often
diverted into making arty stuff), I value intelligence and learning, I
don't do drugs and barely ever drink (and would prefer my mate to be the
same), let alone "get loaded" like so much of the underground seems to
center their lives around (though I will admit to the occasional clove
smoked out of nostalgia). Frankly, I'm not really sure I understand the
tattoo phenomenon, though many of my friends look like South Sea sailors -
not that I loathe tattoos or anything, just if you count getting tattoos
as one of your "interests", I'm kind of unlikely to share in your
enthusiasm. And I guess it's weird to say this, but living in the North
Bay, I sorta have to: if you're a nudist or there are naked pictures of
you on the internet, while I make no value judgement, we probably are not
an ideal couple. I mean, there's a lot of leeway for youthful (and even
not-so-youthful) indiscretions, I've certainly had my own, but I guess I
have pretty traditional values about what I would like now from a
long-term, adult (gulp) relationship.
My ideal date would be one of those brilliant weirdos, chock full of
useless information and primed for those long, un-channeled conversations
that make life thrilling. She ought to have enough relationship experience
to know how to communicate, and how to be strong without being cruel. It
would be nice if she were in a position where she could join me on camping
trips, and possibly travel, since Id like to do some of that before Im
too old to do it right. Im fairly independent, and doing my creative
things is important to me, but I would like someone to metaphorically come
home to - to tell about all the things Im excited about, and cuddle with
and talk until we have to shut up and go to sleep. Plus points (though
certainly not requirements) for short hair, glasses, dorkiness, british or
really any accent (I can dream, cant I?), tom-boys, interest in science
(especially evolution or anthro), and especially for being arty in any way
without being bad-crazy.
Music:
cursive, neutral milk hotel, grandaddy, modest mouse, the hives, pixies, bright eyes / desaparacidos, the smiths, hint hint, hot hot heat, our lady of the highway, engine 88, billy bragg, bruce springsteen's Nebraska
Movies:
the garden state, brazil, fight club, royal tenenbaums, fifth element, whats eating gilbert grape, waking the dead, almost famous, josie and the pussycats, oh brother where art thou, harry potter, some kinda wonderful, princess bride, dark crystal, cheesy stop-action
Television:
It's pretty much all about HBO's original series. Oh, and The Jon Stewart Show. That's all that I watch religiously. The rest is just filler. Though I'm pretty fond of Mythbusters, My Name is Earl, and Real Time with Bill Mahr.
Books:
angelhead, choke, fight club, geek love, youth in revolt, shot in the heart, a perfect storm, the perks of being a wallflower, tumble home, harry potter books, dune series, dave eggers, kurt vonnegut
Heroes:
People who have figured out how to be both well adjusted and creative. I think I'm doing pretty well on that -- better than most creative types I know -- but I'd really like to be one of those guys that just beams with inner peace, and is all bearded and lives on a farm with a stream, with a wife and a couple of rugrats, but then does amazing artistic things. Kind of like the guy from Built To Spill, from what I understand. That would be awesome.
