Tenor saxophonist and flutist Gary Thomas is, without a doubt, one of the most original and identifiable stylists and composers of his generation. Showing a penchant for twisted melodies, dense harmonies, "wall of sound" backgrounds and colliding shapes and forms, his music is a vivid portrayal of life through art, as he sees it. He has played amongst the very best--Miles Davis, Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Sam Rivers, Pat Metheny, Dennis Chambers, and so many more. For the last ten years, he has been the Director and Chair of Jazz Studies at The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, where he teaches saxophone, flute, theory, improvisation and ensembles.
