About Me

I don't know if there is a category for my music, but I think it should be called Basement or at the very least, Partially Finished Basement. This is where the music happens, often late at night when everyone else is asleep.
When I was four years old in 1962, I had my first musical awakening. I was listening to the radio and Ray Charles was singing "I Can't Stop Loving You". I sat behind the wood stove absorbing that music into my very core. That moment is as real today as it was back then. The local radio station played mostly country, and I was also fond of "Wolverton Mountain" by Claude King, and "Act Naturally" by Buck Owens.
A few years later, I discovered the Beatles via cartoons on television. I remember hearing "Devil In Her Heart", "Chains", and "A Hard Days Night". The Beatles were the coolest thing ever. It was hard not to get swept up by Beatlemania.
By the time 1967 came along, The Monkees had surpassed The Beatles on my musical scale. I got the album "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd." for Christmas and listened to it non-stop. It was a wonderful album for a nine year old - psychedelic bubblegum pop music with great melodies and lots of references to girls. I got it on cd last year and still treasure it. Not much has changed...
In my teens, I got interested in all kinds of music. I started out on the drums, and later got into playing guitar. High energy music had a big impact on me - David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, MC5, The Stooges, The Sex Pistols, The Who. When I write and record these days, these early influences often seem to be present.
-
* Wind Up
The future seems so uncertain at times; we never know where we might wind up.
* Creatures of Habit
It's an imperfect world - we've got to try harder to change it.
* Black Train
I've found St. John's Wort to be an effective remedy for SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).
* Lucky Day
Some days just turn out that way—and you really don’t know, when you wake up, which kind it’s going to be.
* No Yeah
Having young kids, I hear lots of no, no, no no....

"Creatures of Habit" lyrics:
--
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Good habit, bad habit
--
I’m drunk and dirty
I ain’t so pretty
Must cleanse the slime
Clean up my brainwashed mind
--
Great ball of fire that heats our earth
We’re so complacent about it, we don’t know its worth
Instead of a world filled with solar panels and wind farms
We’re fighting corporate wars for oil and doing a world of harm
You see the politicians just bow down to the big business needs
It’s the bottom line that counts, for the shareholder’s greed
We’ve got to act now and do the right thing
To make this world a better place for all us human beings
--
Oh yeah, oh yeah
--
I’m drunk and dirty
I’m kind of worried
It ain’t so pretty
What’s going on in the world
--
And then there’s Peter MacKay
Sold his soul at the crossroads, that’s what I say
He’s a two faced liar, you’ve got to hand it to Belinda
Left him with the neighbor’s dog crying in the cinders
Yeah, he’ll have his day of crash and burn
But from his follies we all can learn
To be better humans and learn to tell the truth
And be good to our earth, and recognize its worth
--
We’re creatures of habit, never get it right
Creatures of habit, always have to fight
Creatures of habit, we can’t men our ways
Creatures of habit, blind for all our days
--
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Good habit, bad habit
