About Me

Carved out of Canada’s backwoods of rural decay & beaten barroom pianos, The Matthews Brothers started on an old road to music in classical training. Rob studied theory/harmony, history, & piano through private lessons, and went on to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in composition & classical guitar. Cole followed similar steps in classical training, while maintaining a focus on popular music. He continues his own studies, working towards a Bachelor of Music degree.

Now drawing from a breadth of compositional ideas, The Matthews Brothers write & compose in sounds & styles they know & feel. The music looks for freshness & future, while embracing the richness of the past. It is seeking to take new directions & find old forgotten paths - once worn & cherished, still full of unexplored possibility. Combining compositional techniques and tricks of both traditional & modern art music, while maintaining a strong sense for vintage & modern popular flavours, The Matthews Brothers have tapped into their own ever-developing sound, rich of diversity.

First & foremost, the music is ‘Rock.’ Accomplished in the instrumentation of a four-piece rock band, The Matthews Brothers write & perform in a personal, stripped-down acoustic approach, which extends to the farther reaches of a driving & teeming energy, full of expressive orchestral layers. Written with whole-hearted senses of time, place, & beauty, capturing broad ranges of emotional thought within, the impulsive melodies speak to articulate everything from short stories to vast ranges of human emotion.

--"These classically trained brothers take inspiration from their past to write the diverse songs you hear today. These are tracks packed with orchestral layers of energy and honesty. Take a listen, you won’t forget them." - Mary-Anne Korosi, New Music Canada, CBC Radio 3--
