Mako Fitts, Ph.D.Mako Fitts is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Seattle University, and affiliate faculty in the Global African Studies and Women Studies Programs. She is an authority on race and ethnic relations, gender inequality, cultural studies, and community mobilization specifically using hip hop as a tool for social justice activism. Her graduate dissertation, “The Political Economy of Hip Hop and the Cultural Production of Black Women’s Images,†explored contemporary power relations among entertainment industries that produce, market, and distribute rap music and a hip hop sensibility that influences popular culture both in the United States and abroad. Dr. Fitts has published a review of the documentary “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes†for the Freedom Socialist as well as essays on body ethics and aesthetics among women on color, women in hip hop, and early 20th century Black women’s activism. Her most recent article, “‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’: Culture Industry Laborers and their Perspectives on Rap Music Video Production,†will appear in the upcoming volume of Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism.

Dr. Gary Kinté Perry is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and affiliate with the Global African Studies and Women’s Studies programs at Seattle University. Professor Perry received his doctorate in sociology from The University of Nebraska in 2005. His doctoral dissertation is entitled Whose Job Is It? A Mixed Methods Analysis of Occupational Stereotyping and Occupational Prestige Ranking in the New Economy. Professor Perry also has a Masters of Arts in Sociology from The University of Arkansas and a Bachelor’s of Science in sociology from Southern University and A&M College—Baton Rouge. His areas of interest are: urban sociology, education polices & practices, and U.S. labor history & movements. He has published writings on racism in higher education and authored commentary for the Freedom Socialist and the Association of Black Sociologists. He is currently working on a project regarding urban gentrification in Seattle with Dr. Mako Fitts. He is also researching the anti-standardized-testing movement in Seattle. Professor Perry is a member of the American Sociological Association; the Association of Black Sociologists; the Pacific Sociological Association, and Alpha Kappa Delta—an international honor society of sociologists.
