I am here for Friends

About Me

Right now music, books, films and friends are without doubt the most enjoyable things for me, and long may it continue.

I live in a tiny, overcrowded, developing country. It is not always much fun. Education, health and housing are of poor quality and mostly restricted to the rich. Work is, at the moment, relatively easy to find but is often of a monotonous, soul-crushing nature. Or just part-time. Crime is high and police IQs are low. The country is at war on (at least) two fronts, spending millions in bombs and bullets that mostly seem to miss. Free speech and the right to protest are limited. That said, it's a pretty country and even quite pleasant when away from the masses.

My Interests

Music, books (early C20th is a fave), gigs, travel (must get to Tokyo...), history (but not the future). And shiny guitars.

I'd like to meet:

THE GOOD: The godlike Caesars, hail them!!! Chad Shiny; The Mackenzies / Filthy Tongues; Charlie Burchill; Joakim Berg - a full-on genius.

THE BAD: Tony Blair - he's gone but I still hate his smarmy guts. Robert Mugabe - Satan in a limo; And all the sad, ugly faux-indie bands that seem to be all the rage. Was that what we fought the Indie Wars for?

THE UGLY: Uh! Keep away, you're cramping my style! No, really, I mean it.

Kent - Socker

Music:

Kent (from Sweden), the Psychedelic Furs, Shiny Toy Guns, David Bowie, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, Simple Minds, Sohodolls, the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Birthday Massacre, Social Distortion, the Slingbacks, Isa & the Filthy Tongues, Girl in a Coma, Love Spit Love, the Sisters of Mercy, the Motorcycle Boy, OMD, BAD, XC-NN and loads of super-cool Swedes: Elin Sigvardsson, Marit Bergman, Caesars, Last Days of April, Teddybears STHLM, Yvonne, the Cardigans, the Sounds.

Movies:

The Seventh Seal, the Wild Bunch, anything with Stanley Baker, Insomnia (the Swedish one), Das Boot, Spinal Tap, Swingers, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Hamlet (the Branagh one, please), Ghost World, Brighton Rock, Sunset Boulevard, Black Angel 2, Kontroll. Louise Brooks, Greta Garbo and Scarlett Johansson make me faint.... And Ingmar Bergman was a genius.

Television:

TV mostly sucks, but Green Wing, Scrubs, My Name is Earl and The Mighty Boosh rule. And the Simpsons too. TV needs more ice hockey.

Books:

F Scott Fitzgerald, who bestrode this narrow world like a colossus!!! Joseph Conrad, Richard Aldington, Somerset Maugham, Evelyn Waugh, Robert Frost.

Heroes:

Joakim Berg, Charlie Burchill, Chad Shiny, Greta Garbo, Richard Butler, TE Lawrence, John Ashton. Bit fond of Joan of Arc too, bless her.

Sohodolls

Seeing as Kent and Caesars are Swedish and the Shinys are American, the Sohodolls are therefore the best band in Britain right now! That's logic, don't argue with it! A grey and VERY wet Southend saw ...

We must make an idol of our fear, and call it god.

As if Monday morning wasn't depressing enough, Ingmar Bergman has died. At 89 I guess it's not exactly a shock but it's made me and others genuinely sad. For my money he was the greatest film dire...

Whitby

My first real break of the year, to Whitby for the famous Goth weekend, required a six hour drive. I hate driving anywhere, ever. Plus my car has already done 172,000 miles so it didn't really need a...

Cars

I know you like to be kept informed, so I should tell you I had new brake pads fitted yesterday. I know! Such a fun way to spend £90.00. Thing is, as I drove home - that'll be along the A12 and A14, o...

Burlesque

Burlesque. Bur-llocks. The most awful pub/wedding dj, a shit band playing shit music - seemingly for ever - and far too many far too average women shuffling awkwardly about a tiny stage; the view of t...

Shiny Joy Guns

Back in Colchester again, on something of a media roll and with We Are Pilots finally about to be released, the Shinys. Although this must have been the smallest date of the tour by far, there seems n...

Isa and the Filthy Tongues

Two weeks ago I'd never been to Bar Monsta, then suddenly I had two gigs there in eight days. And they couldn't have been more different&.. This Friday saw the London début of Isa and the Filthy Tong...

Shiny Toy Goodness

They came back! Yay! After July's abortive gig, the Shiny's swept back into Colchester in their enormo-bus and graced us with a storming set of their supercharged electronica pop-rock. I like!! I coul...

The Prince of Wales

Ah! Goodbye Mr Mackenzie have added the song "Prince of Wales" to their myspace page - and now it's on mine. Oooooohhhhh, it's one of my fave tracks ever! Ever! Happy, happy. Thing is, they mis-spelle...
