Aleister Crowley remains a controversial figure. He wasreseurrected from obscurity by the Beatles, Led Zeppelin andOzzy Osbourne. Crowley born is 1875 became an accomplishedmountain climber, world traveller, writer, poet,painter andsocialized in Bohemian circles. "Abbey of Thelema" is tacklingthe most controversial part of Crowley's life, beginning in NewYork as a painter and meeting Leah Hirzig. The Abbey, foundedin Sicily in 1920, was a forerunner of hippie communities with it'sexperimentation of drugs and sexuality. With a media campaignlaunched (who named Crowley "the Englishman we'd like tohang" and "the wickedest man on Earth"), and Mussolini'sabolishing secret societys (from Mafia to occult ones),Crowleywas deported in 1923. Crowley remained mainly in Europe untilhis Great Feast (Death) December 1st, 1947.

DEAR ABBEY
"Do what thou wilt" was the credo of occultist Aleister Crowley. And in that do-it-yourself spirit, some local filmmakers have made a movie about Crowley that screens at 9:30 Monday night at the Tivoli, 6350 Delmar Boulevard.Mike Ketcher stars in "Abbey of Thelema," based on the true story of Crowley's commune in Sicily where magick filled the air like incense. The movie also features modern-day vampire Don Henrie and adult-film legend Ron Jeremy, so for $10 it ought to be a beastly good bargain.

The first thing you will notice on arrival at The Abbey Of Thelema is the breathtaking view: the sea just a kilometre away as the crow flies, the north coast of Sicily towards Palermo and green hills and woodland all around. There is a breath taking view of The Rock where Alesiter takes curious visitors rock climbing. The house itself is all on one floor. Immediately to the right of there entrance is the Temple area, whose walls are adorned with beautiful murals testifying to the property’s function of a magickal monestary. A beautiful altar is the focal point of the room. Immediately opposite the entrance is the original kitchen where Betty May prepares the food. To the left of the entrance, there is a bedroom, with an adjoining living quarters. Another door leads to the main sleeping area at the back of the house where Aleister Crowley dwells and studies. A seperate house, the Umbilicus, houses any children of residents and visitors. An entrance fee is required and no pets are allowed.
