Suburban Voice

Corrupting the youth since 1982!

About Me

Greetings... my name's Al and this is the story of my zine...

It all started in 1982. I was writing for a local zine called Concentration X and they mangled my writing. So I thought, OK, let me try something on my own. Over the course of a few nights in the late summer, I typed up four pages of live and record reviews, slapped the name Suburban Punk across the top page and gave the pages to my dad to run off at work on the xerox machine. He made me 50 copies and I took 'em a to a few shows and sold 'em for a quarter apiece. The start of a publishing empire? I don't know but, since that time, I've published another 45 issues (Issue 33-34 was one issue).

After 10 issues, the name of the zine was changed to Suburban Voice. The print version of SV has been dormant in recent years but I'm planning to get things going again. The last issue was published in July of '03 but that WON'T be the last print issue. I would also like to eventually have a Suburban Voice site. It seems as though things are always in the planning stages and I plod along at a snail's pace but I'm trying!

In the meantime, you can read my Suburban Voice blog which I try to update fairly frequently. I'm also a columnist for Maximum Rock 'n Roll , AMP Magazine and Mass Movement . I also blog regularly on my personal page here.

If you've never seen the 'zine, I write about punk, hardcore and garage from all eras... occasionally some metal or classic rock... not so much emo, nu-metal, screamo, etc...

My main project in recent years has been my radio show Sonic Overload, which can heard on the web at this link . The show is updated every Monday.

Records/CD's/demos etc. are always welcome for review... I don't review MP3s nor advance-type packages--what I mean is send the actual release with artwork/inserts, etc...

Mailing address: Suburban Voice, PO Box 2746, Lynn, MA 01903

Thanks to everyone for the support over the years...

My Interests

Sometimes cranky musical obsessive but I like to think I'm still a nice guy.

I'd like to meet:

anyone, really... unless you're racist, sexist, homophobic, nationalistic, etc...

A NOTE ON COMMENTS: if you're going to post ads for records, you damn well better send me one to review! :-)

Music:

the list is endless... any music with spirit, heart, energy from the 50s until now but 70s punk and 80s hardcore are what changed my life...

My Blog

Punk is truly dead!

(note: this was also posted on my personal blog but in case you missed it.... and since it's music related, it made sense to post it here, as well)I got quite a response to that bulletin I posted earl...

a reminder about comments...

... I don't mind if people post comments to promote their various projects. Just make sure if it's advertising a record/CD/etc... it'd be nice if you sent a copy for possible review/airplay. Address i...

the Skrewdriver sneak

... I just got a friend request from someone. His profile is set to private, I added him and then took a look at his page. Under his musical choices, there were photos of different bands and record co...

Yes, I’m alive... or, more accurately, the zine’s alive

I seem to be getting more questions lately about when there will be another print issue of Suburban Voice. I keep saying "soon," "it'll happen," etc. I still don't know exactly when. The main obstacle...

Download cards... a stupid idea

I guess it's the '00s. For the second time, instead of a record or CD, I've received a plastic credit type card where I'm directed to a site to download the item instead of receiving a physical copy. ...

reviewing policy... and a word about comments

Just to reiterate a few things about music reviews. I'm happy to accept vinyl, CDs, even CD demos and tapes for review. But I don't review "advance" packages without the booklet/insert or with one of ...

as promised: SUBURBAN PUNK 1

Here it is... four pages of crap. Done on a manual typewriter by an impressionable 22 year old and run off at my dad's work. Total print run (two printings): probably 90-100 copies. ...

25 years of Suburban Voice

... I've been getting birthday wishes on here. Actually, it's not my own birthday (which is February 12) but the birthday of Suburban Voice, originally Suburban Punk. I forget the exact publication da...

new SUBURBAN VOICE print zine

... hold on there, buddy. It's just a two page zine but the material won't appear on my blog. I did it for the Warkrime/Rabies show happening in Cambridge this weekend and I won't even be able to go. ...
