An article I found regarding our first show:Vandals trash Cary row home
The landlord is stunned, but he's already looking aheadBY WILL JONESTIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER Apr 16, 2004Suffice it to say, the security deposit won't be returned.Boyd Beverage returned from a Caribbean cruise last weekend to find that vandals had destroyed the inside of the brick row house he owns at 1306 W. Cary St.Windows were broken, walls were punctured and covered with graffiti, and appliances, including the refrigerator and smoke detectors, were ruined. Police estimate the damage at $35,000, he said."I think it was a planned deal, personally," he said. "Whatever it was, was like a feeding frenzy."
Beverage, a 60-year-old retired supervisor for Reynolds Metals, bought the house, near Virginia Commonwealth University, about 10 years ago and spent about $80,000 to refurbish it three years ago.He said he had been leasing the house since September to four young men who hadn't caused any trouble."That's why I'm scratching my head - what the hell happened?" he asked. The tenants moved out before or after the mayhem, and Beverage hasn't been able to find them. He said they ranged in age from late-teens to mid-20s, and he wasn't sure whether they were VCU students.A survey of the damage yesterday showed walls covered with obscenity-laced graffiti, including "Negative Youth" in black electrical tape and "Think about the consequences of your actions" in red spray paint."This is about the only thing they didn't mess up," Beverage said, opening a kitchen drawer.Richmond police are investigating the damage, as well as vandalism that occurred at 1304 W. Cary St. No arrests have been made.Despite the incident, Beverage is determined to have the place fixed up and ready for rent by the start of the fall semester. He considers himself a tenant-friendly landlord and said he doesn't charge extra if the rent is a little late.Even that policy won't change."I was young, too," he said. "I remember how hard it was to scratch a buck."They didn't know it was because we had a crucial eviction house show...
