About Me

On 5 October 2006 something happened to me...I 'stood up' for the first time. After meeting Mr Alan Rutledge across a poker table one night and hearing about the 'Open Mic' scene in Brisbane, I decided to give this comedy thing a go.
The first time I stood up, went amazingly well (relax I have died many a death since then) and the MC for the evening, none other than Hollywood Brett Sheargold, said words to the effect of 'you're a natural, you've got it, I saw Kitty Flannigan and Julia Morris the first time they stood up and you are better than they were'. Then the lovely sound guy Mark Ritche said words to the effect of 'that is the best first 5 minutes from a female comedian I have ever seen!'
Well after that and with much encouragement from Hollywood Brett, I was hooked. What was meant to be a one time only event has become an absolute passion! I am a lawyer by trade, specialising in commercial litigation (which of course, is about as funny as cancer) but comedy is a wonderful outlet for my madness.
So am I any good? hmmmm I really want to say 'HELL YEAH...FUNNIEST EVER!' but I will be honest and say, I am not too bad...I am getting better...the main thing is that I enjoy it and I seem to be able to make people laugh. My friends think I am funny...occassionally....but not when I am telling bad pun jokes (ie Christian the Prawn) which I love. I have a very odd sense of humour at times.
The most honest and pure thing I can say about myself is that I love to laugh. I think the move into stand up comedy was just a progression from that. I love telling jokes and stories, always have (Jimbo and Keith if you ever read this...I still miss our joke telling sessions at The Club!).

My Interests

Playing poker, bushwalking, cooking, making jewellery, drinking good coffee and Daniel.

I'd like to meet:

Anyone funny...or anyone who thinks I am funny!!!
(I know I probably won't get many friends that way but who is counting?? It is quality not quantity, I always say!)

Music:

I have the most eclectic collection of CDs out of anyone I know...everything from rock, pop, jazz, opera, classical and dance. Currently on the CD player is Peter Gabriel, before him it was Linkin Park.

I find it difficult to pick 'favourite' artists, it just depends on what mood I am in...but the most played cds in my collection come from Melissa Ethridge, The Whitlams, Scissor Sisters, Pink, Tears for Fears ('Elemental'...what a fantastic album), Jeff Buckley, Sting, Michael Buble, Dusty Springfield, Crowded House, Coldplay and Leonard Cohen.

Movies:

The Godfather Trilogy, The Shawshank Redemption, The Princess Bride, The Colour Purple and Gone with the Wind are my all time favourites.

Television:

TV...don't get much time for that unfortunately...I do like watching Lateline though. Tony Jones is definitely the thinking woman's crumpet!

Books:

I love reading. I particularly like reading non-fiction books. I am a member of a non-fiction bookclub called S.N.O.B. (which is a loose acronym for 'Serious works Of Non-fiction Bookclub'). We are currently reading 'The Tipping Point' by Malcolm Gladwell.

Other books we have read that I have found interested have been 'Infidel: My Life' by Ayann Hirsi Ali and 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins. If you are living in Brisbane and would like to become a SNOB...send me a message and I will give you some details!

Heroes:

I don't know that I have any 'heros' as such...except maybe my Mum and Dad. I find inspiration in most people I meet and my friends and family inspire me daily. My favourite people in this world are those who are a little bit quirky, a little bit mad, who proudly march to the beat of their own drum and aren't concerned with 'fitting in' or being 'cool'. They just let their freak flag fly.

Anyone who triumphs over adversity and chooses to live their life in a positive way inspires me. I think you can learn something from just about everyone you meet, even if it is just a lesson in not what to do!
