About Us, it should say...
'More Matter' is a contemporary art duo, consisting of Belgian artists Maurice Michielsen and Wouter Vandevoorde. The two met for the first time right after graduating. Soon after they began collaborating under the name 'More Matter'. They work together on art and exchanging ideas about the art world.
Their main aim is to be an operational part of society and to sympathize with and conform to existing principles. More willingly than criticizing the increasingly capitalist society, they want to use similar marketing rules as corporations and institutions employ, thus making today’s civilization ever more stronger.
In that context, 'More Matter' has recently focused on several new pieces, which came to view on their websites and on the front of a special Documenta edition of A Prior Magazine.
Is contemporary art and (the myth of) cultural activism becoming the foundation of too much optimism and expectations? How large is the part that economical influences play in the creation and processing of art? What is the association between artists and collectors or between artists and their audience? Can a work of art transcend itself and, in a way, become more than art? Can corporate art contribute to a better world? Does the audience benefit when artists play a part in very big and expensive art events, like Documenta? What kind of sales and profits can contemporary artists expect, these days? Should part of the Gross National Product be allocated for the purchase of art works? Is self-importance and disdain truly a reliable indicator of quality?
Is there still a purpose for galleries, dealers or art associations? Is there still a purpose for art?
