Success, whether it’s in music, in business, or in sports, is always a function of two things: talent and hustle. Down at the bottom are the talented people who don’t apply themselves and those who hustle but have no talent, but at the top, up in the major leagues, are the deserving folks who hustle their talents to the upper levels of success.
So it’s appropriate that South Florida MCs Lex One , Mike Beatz , and Verbal Kush , have adopted the namesake of “ Major League .â€
After independently selling almost 10,000 units of their concept-driven 39-track debut CD, “The Grand Larceny Mixtape,†the Ft. Lauderdale-based hip-hop quartet has cemented a solid reputation as the hardest working hip-hop collective on the scene. Such a reputation is bound to make other talented hard workers gravitate to you, which is how the group managed to get N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN to host the CD, which also contains drops from hip-hop luminaries like Grandmaster D of Whodini and Baby Bam of The Jungle Brothers, as well as guest appearances by nearly every accomplished South Florida MC.
True fans of the genre know that the DJ is the backbone of the group, and this group’s backbone is a DJ who schools cats – literally. DJ Trippin is the head instructor at Miami’s Scratch DJ Academy , where he teaches eager students about the most important of the four elements of hip-hop.
Lex One , a strong architect visionary, has a colorful background filled with more personal and financial ups and downs than a rollercoaster, all of which have added to his character development and made him into a man with an unrelenting work ethic. Raised in Jamaica, Mike Beatz eventually landed in Florida, where he spent a few introverted years mastering the fine art of production before linking up with Lex One through MySpace. The two young men clicked and laid the groundwork for what was to eventually become Major League . They rounded out their home run hitting roster when die hard MC Verbal Kush heard opportunity knocking and jumped on the first available flight from New York to Florida just to join the team.
Major League grinds daily at Hi-Top Studio , a state of the art recording facility and artist development center that doubles as a retail store for all the latest in hip-hop fashion. The Ft. Lauderdale studio has become home base not only for Major League , but also for major artists and skilled local talent looking to step up to the plate and make hits.
Career highlights for Major League include sharing stages with Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Souls of Mischief, KRS One, Masta Ace, Kool Keith, De La Soul, Jeru the Damaja, and many more. They have also amassed an impressive list of guest appearances on tracks including Cappadonna (Wu-Tang Clan), Jeru the Damaja, C-Rayz Walz (MTV’s “Madeâ€), Ty Nitty (Infamous Mobb), King Sun, Rick Ross, DJ Smallz (Southern Smoke) and local pioneers Butta Verses, Dynas and Garcia.
After dominating the South Florida music scene for so long, it’s time for this undefeated team to go play some away games. For booking inquiries contact Alex Cruz (Lex One) at [email protected] .
