G8 Action on Child Healthcare!

Cast your minds back to 2005, or rather July 2005, when in Scotland and around the world millions of people stood up against poverty. Following this unprecedented pressure the G8 made the commitment to halve global poverty by 2010.

Three years later and with two years left until the deadline the G8 have fallen far behind on keeping this promise.

In just over four months the G8 will be meeting for their annual conference, this year based in Japan; before this happens we need to put real pressure on the government to keep its past promises and to tell us how and when they will do so.

Take action with us now and once again stand up with people from across the world in calling for justice and an end to poverty:

Campaigning in Action:

The If not NOW, When? Campaign has now reached its end outside number 10 Downing Street. Over the last six months thousands of World Vision supporters took action sending back more than 2,000 postcards and hundreds of online e-petitions that were added to the truly amazing 25,000 total collected by the Stop AIDS Coalition, of which World Vision is part.

On the final day a tonne of things happened including a special student Q&A with Andrew Mitchell MP, Shadow Secretary of State for International Development; a student meeting with his Lib Dem counterpart Michael Moore MP; a high profile delegate visit to the Japanese Embassy and; finally the hand in at number 10 in which World Vision and Oxfam chief exec’s Charles Badenoch and Barbara Stocking took part while being cheered on by student campaigners demonstrating outside.(See the background!!)

The campaign has been very successful in engaging supporters across the country and a very large number of politicians have been lobbied on the calls. The government will soon launch its new three year HIV and AIDS strategy and when it does we will report back on more!

Campaigning?

You stand in a crowded room, there is easily over 200 people and the place is so noisy you can barely hear yourself think. Across the other side you see a friend enter, you call out to get their attention but your voice is lost in the din. You then ask 50 of the closest people to you to help out, and so together you all call out your friends name in one voice silencing the rest of the room and your friend hears you!

This is what we do. Although the friend is the Government and the people in the room are the UK public. You see the more people who back an idea or a cause the greater the chance that the Government will hear, listen and take action.

Check out the pictures above to see what we've been up to!
