I want to be different while I stay the same

About Me

For the first nine years of my vocal career, which began at the age of twenty one, I fronted Sophie Garner and her Swing Kings, a nine piece rhythm and blues jump jive outfit. I released two recordings with The Swing Kings, 'Gone Bananas' and 'On Revival Day'. In 1998 I was awarded for being the Perrier Jazz finalist of the year. I have performed at hundreds of jazz clubs, festivals and concerts across England, Europe and the Middle East and clients I have worked for include: Gratzia Magazine (Dubai), Houses of Parliment, HMS Invincible, Earnst & Young, Sony, BP, Experian, Phone's 4U and Lloyds TSB as support act to Will young, The Sugarbabes and Mc Fly. I have also entertained Van Morrison, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Keith Emerson. I released my debut Jazz album 'Champagne and False Eyelashes' in 2005 at London's Pizza on the Park. I wrote the title track especially for the film 'Lipstick' which I also starred in with actor Jack Shepherd (Wycliffe, Charlotte Gray). I've also appeared on many TV programmes and was also cast in 'A Very English Genius' playing the wife of Lois Ventris. This film has been shown on BBC television on several occasions. I am currently busy in the studio working with a producer on original material for my forthcoming album."Sophie Garner sings with a real voice it addresses you directly and breathes life into every song......" THE OBSERVER“One of the most stylish British vocal releases of recent months, supplying an exceptionally thoughtful mix of the familiar and unfamiliar……” THE TIMES “This is a firmly handled debut by this UK-based singer ……". JAZZWISE “I get a lot of albums sent my way, some good, some great and some exceptional. Garner’s album, “Champagne and False Eyelashes” fell firmly into the later group for me. Possessing a clear, well intoned sound. Her collection of originals and well chosen covers make for an extraordinarily radio friendly display. New women vocalists on the jazz scene are sadly ten a penny. My money's on Sophie Garner, a sure hybrid of Carmen, Doris and Monheit."…..IAN SHAW“Garner matches a distinct swing style with a cool but intricate delivery, packing a punch in the simplest and shortest phrase…. I wager she could give Ella a run for her money; she certainly has the attitude. In the end what she offered was a rich tapestry, though having just had an amazing dinner, I likened the experience more to a gourmet dessert, say chocolate mouse: light, but incredibly rich… if you ever hear of her giving a live performance, go. No sense in eating shepherds pie when there's a ready roast available”……..NEEMA MAWIYOO –BBC LONDON RADIO JAZZ FESTIVAL

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: sophiegarner.com
Band Members: Including:Alex Southgate -Piano and hammond organ. John Maul - piano. Darren Bazzoni -drums and percussion. PJ Phillips- Electric bass. Bill Liesegang- guitar. Nick Newall - Flute.
Influences: Jazz, soul, rhythm'n'blues, funk, rock, Classical, punk, ska, reggae, northern soul, drum and bass, trip hop. Where do you begin and end? There is good music somewhere in every genre. I am also influenced by memories, dreams, nature, my family, friends, my partner and all my experiences in life. This is a mix of my favourite bands and musicians and my musical influences but I could add to to this list every month with the new things I discover. Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughn, Ella fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sam Cook, Ruth Brown, Big Mumma Thornton, Wyona Carr, Wynonie Harris, Killing Joke, Xray Spex, early Ultravox (before Midge joined bless him!) The Dead Kennedy's, Oscar Peterson, 4 Hero, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Nice, John Holt, Trojan records, Augustus Pablo, Vaughn Williams, Elgar, Kate Bush, early Eurythmics, Jethro Tull, James Brown, The Prodigy, Prince, Pat Metheny, Tower of Power, George Benson, Earth Wind and Fire, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Rose Royce, Anita Baker, Joni Mitchel, Jimi Hendrix, The Peddlars, The Pair Extraordinaire, The Beatles, Eartha Kitt, The Ruts, Adam and the Ants, Shirley Horne, Cream.
Sounds Like: I sing with my own voice and don't try to sound like anyone else. Every band and every artist is influenced to a lesser or greater degree by those we listen to, even if it's not a conscious thing, and so it will continue until music stops playing. So I guess there's an influence of everything I have ever listened to. It's all gone into a big melting pot, to make the music I am producing now.
