About Me

Artist, activist, athlete, Vanessa Chakour embodies dedication to mind, body and spirit in her daily life, as well as in her life’s work. Vanessa’s art combines influences from her musical background, her love of words and her deep sense of connection to the discovery of “self.” She has created album covers, portraits of artists, evocative “innerscapes” as well as many other works of art. She is currently working on a book and series of exhibitions with photographer, Jamel Shabazz. Vanessa’s activism has emerged as a response to the understanding of the connectedness between people and the urgent need to work diligently for positive social change. As a former professional boxer, Vanessa showed her strength as a world class athlete and uses the same energy and determination to mobilize people and resources towards creative solutions to problems. As an artist, Vanessa realizes the power of the arts to shape social change and awareness. She has coordinated concerts/events to raise awareness/funds for various causes. These include HOPE, a charitable celebration with His Holiness the Dalai Lama that raised funds to support Tibetan art and culture through the Norbulingka Institute. She is also an athlete ambassador with “Right To Play” a global organization that uses sport for development and peace.
She is now directing The Stop the Violence Movement recently revitalized by KRS-ONE and is a consultant for arts, artists and non-profit organizations. She is represented by Agora Gallery in NYC and working on her fine art collection.

The Stop the Violence Movement (STVM) is a non-profit organization deeply rooted in the Hip Hop community with a mission to advance an ongoing series of movements to diminish global violence through education, critical dialogue, grassroots organizing and direct action. The STVM achieves its mission by providing organized programs, workshops, symposiums and media campaigns that heighten the awareness of the effects of violence, create multi-generational dialogue and supplies parent and youth oriented educational tools for conflict resolution. The STVM is calling upon fellow celebrities to take action. We are calling upon the mass media to address the images they put forth. We are calling for balance! Balance within ourselves, balance in the media, in our communities, in the world.

Please donate to the STVM so we may work toward peace and conflict resolution every day of the year!!!
YOUR DONATION ENABLES US TO CARRY OUT THE MISSION - EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS!!!
