“A Women’s Touch†REVIEW
for “Out of the Box†by Tim DillengerIt's a sad commentary that the mainstream, record buying public does not recognize Thelma Houston in the same regard as they do Aretha, Patti and Gladys, the seemingly first ladies of soul. It's also hard to believe that it's been 17 years since this most gifted artist has released an album.Thankfully, that 17 years ended this week with the release of A Woman's Touch.A Woman's Touch is a collection of 10 songs, orginally written and recorded by male artists, reinterpreted from Thelma's point of view. The song selections alone prove the depth of artistry that Houston has carried since day one. One can't forget that earliest work was produced by Jimmy Webb and one of her earliest singles was an interpretation of Laura Nyro's "Save The Country".Kicking off with a timely rendition of Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes' "Wake Up Everybody", Thelma makes us very aware that she is back. Her voice is full of passion, sincerity and contains every bit of the rich texture that made us fall in love with her 30 years ago.She brilliantly redefines Sting's "Brand New Day", Marvin Gaye's "Distant Lover" and Al Green's "Love & Happiness", astounding us with not only reminders of how well crafted these songs were in their inital recordings, but also with how many different meanings these songs can have for the listener. It is another Marvin Gaye tune, "Ain't That Peculiar" and Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love" that are the standout cuts, showing Houston's ability to tell a story with a song, taking the listener on a tour de force...taking us to church, reminding us of our blues and sending a message of comfort and encouragement...and not letting us forget that she can SANG.What I love about this album is that it dispels the notion that Houston is simply a disco diva. With only two dance cuts in tow (Luther Vandross' "Never Too Much" and a tribute to Sylvester, "Dance (Disco Heat)/Mighty Real"), she puts the focus on songs and arrangements that bring musicianship, melody and vocalization to the forefront.
