About Me

For the first time, Smokey Robinson, one of the great singers of modern pop, has recorded an album almost wholly comprised of the Great American Songbook. On Timeless Love (New Door/UMe) released June 13, 2006, Smokey puts his indelible stamp on some of the most romantic of jazz, big band and traditional pop standards of the 20s, 30s and 40s.Timeless Love, his first non-holiday, non-gospel album since 1999s Intimate, revisits the music of that bygone but swingin era. Among the songs Smokey tackles from the 20s are "I Cant Give You Anything But Love (Baby), popularized by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Billie Holiday, and Tea For Two, the hit from the musical No, No, Nanette. Songs on the album that were first made famous by Holiday and/or Frank Sinatra in the 30s and 40s include Cole Porters Ive Got You Under My Skin and Night And Day, the Ogden Nash-Kurt Weill collaboration Speak Low, You Go To My Head, Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words) and More Than You Know. (Smokeys relationship with two of these classics goes back to the early 60s: he previously recorded Speak Low and Ive Got You Under My Skin with the Miracles, on their album Ill Try Something New, in 1962.)The legendary songwriting team of Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh is heard in their immortal Im In The Mood For Love, a signature song for Nat King Cole; Smokey adds to the classic flavor by deftly weaving into his performance the James Moody/King Pleasure interpolation of the tune, Moodys Mood For Love. George and Ira Gershwins Love Is Here To Stay was long associated with Ella Fitzgerald; Im Glad There Is You was a Sarah Vaughan favorite. Sinatra and Vaughan recorded memorable renditions of Sammy Cahn and Jule Stynes Time After Time, which Smokey combines with Cyndi Laupers same-titled 1984 ..1 pop hit into a sparkling medley. The most recent song on Timeless Love was penned by another lauded tunesmith--Smokey Robinson. I Love Your Face premiered on his 1992 album, Double Good Everything.Smokeys lifetime achievements include 36 Top 40 hits, a Grammy Living Legend Award, berths in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Soul Train Heritage Award and numerous other honors. Timeless Love is a gorgeous, haunting record just the latest chapter in the career of a truly timeless pop star.
