About Me

Greetings Myspace Peeps! I dwell in the gorgeous City of Roses, aka Portland, Oregon. I have been creating politically and socially conscious news and public affairs programming for KBOO Community Radio here in Portland since 2000. For most of that time I worked in an all female collective producing an hour long, bi-monthly show called Circle A Radio. This grassroots show covers a wide variety of topics striving to give voice to underepresented communities and issues. Whether we were putting together a program about Immigrant Rights, Police Brutality, Dine Grandmothers engaged in resistance for indigenous land in Arizona, the Gentrification of Portland, (the list goes on!) I always wanted to get some Hip-Hop music up in there! I would often spend hours listening to records trying to find just the right track to go with that weeks topic, and I could always find one or two or more! I am in LOVE with Underground Hip-Hop music and have MUCH respect for Hip-Hop culture, the history is profound and has deep deep roots. It gets in there......it offers such a good vehicle for saying it like it is, for being blunt, for healing.......its REAL, its RAW. I am now working as a solo Journalista focusing on this topic that I love so much, and what I feel connects so many issues, people and places. So........I decided to make a documentary all about Underground Hip-Hop, the Elements that make it up, what it means to people, where it has been, where it is now and most exciting......where its going!! Hip-Hop is an ever growing International MOVEMENT capable of widespread INSPIRATION, EDUCATION, CULTURE CHANGE, and MIND DECOLONIZING, on a MASS level. In the past few months I have been lucky enough to have traveled to Los Angeles two times for two amazing hip-hop events, both put on by Divine Forces Radio (Big Ups to DFR!!!!!! check them out on KPFK Pacifica Radio every friday from 10pm-1am PST, you can listen online at KPFK.org) The Events were called: Hip-Hop for Education, March 3rd 2007, and The We The People Festival, April 7th 2007. These shows included acts such as Psycho Realm Sick Symphonies, 2Mex, Saul Williams, Medusa, The RZA, GZA/Genius, Sabac Red, Living Legends, Olmeca, Dead Prez, Aztlan Underground,......and many more. I was blown away by the positive energy in that scene down there. The music, the art, being created in the underground scene is so politically AND spiritually conscious. I am so energized, encouraged, and HOPEFUL when I hear and see what is being created through Underground Hip-Hop right now. I had the honor to meet and interview kind hearted, open souls such as DJ Orator (Divine Forces Radio), DJ FM (Psycho Realm/Sick Symphonies), Stacy Epps("music revolutionary sistas"Coalition), Georgia Ann Muldrow, Suheir Hammad, DJ Mark Luv (Zulu Nation), I. Sheik (Revolution of the Mind) and many more.......I look forward to meeting and interviewing Emcees, DJs, Graff Writers, Bboys and girls here in Portland, up in Seattle, NY, Bay Area, the Midwest..........all over the place!! I will be working on this Documentary until it is finished and then i will be trying to get it broadcast far and wide, on community radio stations, pacifica stations, the internet, npr, etc.......STAY TUNED..........Black Dragon.
