About Me

I'm a "lass from the Low Country", with a Dutch Dad and a Belgian Mum, born in The Netherlands. We moved away before I was one, and I grew up in Luxembourg, the second of four children, a sister with three brothers. I attended the European School. Then I lived in Holland, where I developed my childhood passion for folk dancing, learning dances from the Balkans, Israel, and many other areas. First I did arts in Rotterdam, then French at the University in Leiden. I was dancing in a display group called La Popoldancantoi (which is Esperanto for The Folkdancers) for about 4 years. In those days I did some great travelling, like a sailing trip from Holland to Norway, and three amazing visits to Romania. At work in Delft (Holland) I met a Londoner who got me into scuba diving, married me and took me away to live amongst the Brits. First we lived in Ealing (West London), then in Oxfordshire. We have a daughter of 16 and a son of 14. First I started work in publishing, then started my own fabric dyeing business (on hold right now, but you can see some of my hand-dyed fabrics here in the background). More recently I've been working in finance. We have a Newfoundland, who is 10 years old, and a Corn Snake.

Joan Baez - KIZ ÇOCUGU (by well loved Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet) performed at the Cemil Topuslu Open Air Theatre in Istanbul, Turkey on July 9th 2004.
KIZ ÇOCUGU
Kapýlarý çalan benim
Kapýlarý birer birer
Gözünüze görünemem
Göze görünmez ölüler
Hiroþima'da öleli
Oluyor bir on yýl kadar
Yedi yaþýnda bir kýzým
Büyümez ölü çocuklar
Çalýyorum kapýnýzý
Teyze, amca, bir imza ver
Çocuklar öldürülmesin
Þeker de yiyebilsinler

My Interests

Folk dancing, languages, cultures, travelling, the great outdoors, visual arts, textile arts, fabric dyeing, music, philosophy, meeting people, being with one friend rather than a group, photography, nature, animals. I love the human voice.

Vocal music, sopranos, folk, world music, classical. I prefer acoustic to electric. I love the blues, and jazz-folk. Languages are like music to me. On MySpace I've recently discovered many artists and bands who are fusing Eastern European with Western music - brilliant!

Favourite singers: Joan Baez, Nicole Atkins, Amy Winehouse, Martha Wainwright, Terra Naomi, Ofrah Haza (in Hebrew or in Yemenite - not her club songs), Sarah McLachlan, Dido, Tracy Grammer, Katie Melua, 6 Day Riot, and many more... (see top friends)
