About Me

Myspace Layouts - Myspace Editor

I've enjoyed writing songs and playing electric guitar in rock bands. Albeit I have not been directly involved with the music biz for a few years, I do have some interest in the small goings on of Regina's local music scene. I have had a lot of fun hooking up with new artists on Myspace, sharing ideas, and songs, stories and future plans. I came into rock and roll bands at the age of 14 as a drummer. Switching to guitar a few years later. In those early days Regina was swarming with older talented artists and musicians. They served as my direct mentors and teachers. Record albums of my favorite musicians were my inspiration, but if it weren't for the local cats playing local gigs I doubt that the records themselves would have been enough for me to quickly learn the ins and outs of rock and roll. Local rock bands such as Trina, Elijah, Sunband, A Group Called Mudd, Painter, A Foot In Cold Water, Chilliwack, Eden, Charlet, Blackpool, The Flying Colours, Wascana, The Mad Men, and many others were for the most part equal to Led Zeppelin, and other international bands in terms of raw talent and delivery. I fell into that era along with dozens of other local upstarts. I managed to get in a few years with my band Linx before the first musical drought would hit Saskatchewan. There are always musical troopers who have followed along with their attempts to rebuild a rock and roll marketplace in the Province. I salute them all. I'll be posting new songs along the way so do stop back for them!! My profile may be put into sleep mode this month, as I like many of you have done, require time to re-group and re-energize. I've enjoyed all of the comments I've received thus far, and all of the musicians and fans I've met right here on Myspace!! You are all great people in my books!!!! Download my songs for free! Pass them around to others as you so feel.

Band Members: I hold the ownership of Stubborne Ash. Most of the members who are active musicians are in other groups and projects. I've played with so many talented musicians over the years that I can't keep count of them all. When Stubborne Ash took a break from things, it ended up being a long enough break that I can now start from scratch, and form a new band. I have plans to record a new CD. I am the principle song writer and was so all through the various line ups over the years. Though with this new musical adventure I hope to meet up with another writer and jointly pen some new songs. With the resurgance of melodic hard rock (everywhere but Canada it seems) I hope to get involved with that new fanbase. And as good rock songs never "time out" and as the new fans to hard rock do not consider themselves "retro" but are looking at this new attraction as "New Music" I hope to add my share of tunes to the coming explosion of new rock songs. I'll continue to Play It Loud - And Play It Proud!
Influences: My main influences are from the inventors of British Hard Rock. People such as Tony Iommi and Black Sabbath, Ritchie Blackmore and Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, and let us not forget The Doobie Bros. Certainly my ear liked many bands from the USA and Canada. Jimi Hendrix continues to astound me, as do The Beatles. And also, the best of the Blues artists who just keep hitting those special notes that makes me think to myself "how did he find that note?" My parents loved The Fireballs and The Ventures. Both of these great bands have influences on me right to this day. Without George Tomsco and Nokie Edwards guitar recordings, I dare say that there would not have been a Beatles or any genre that followed them. The first chord progression that I learned on guitar was "Lay Lady Lay" by the Great Bob Dylan. My nephew was named after him. Contained within Mr. Dylan are all of the creative talents that I would also love to have for myself. The term "Genius" falls short in describing Bob Dylan! I enjoy modifying tube guitar amplifiers too! I offer Independent Audio Mastering Services at www.waveradio.ca
Sounds Like: Over the years people tell me I play like Ritchie Blackmore. I may lean that way, only because his guitar playing was difficult to play well. Unless of course you are a prodigy which I am not. So most of the late long hours of practising were spent on Ritchie's records. I can see where that bleeds into my own writing. As for who I sound like......my amplifier is British so it will have a British tone to it which many other players use. Perhaps what keeps me somewhat different from other players is my use of analog echo machines. I use echo and or reverb or both on everything. Sometimes a listener will not notice these effects. But they are always for the most part blended into the sound coming from the amplifier. If I had the ability to exactly copy the sound of anyone I could, I'd likely pick the guitar sound of Ritchie Blackmore. Second to that I'd pick the guitar sound of Frank Marino. Third choice would be the guitar sound of Dan Lowe from the Canadian rock band called Painter. These are the three best representations of what an "electric rock guitar" should be. Of course there are many others examples such as Jimmy Page and Brian May and Eric Clapton and so many others. For my needs however I would go with Ritchie Blackmore first!
